H&R Rifle History Question
« on: January 17, 2009, 09:49:35 AM »
I'm wondering, does anyone know what calibre "original" W&H and then H&R Rifles were offered  in during the Black Powder era?  I'd really love to know what the "originals" might have 'looked like'.  Thanks.  Jim.

Surprised Tim hasn't chimed in.  THat original looks light as a feather.  Think it was a 44-40? 45-70 would probably kick baaaddd in that.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

Two-trigger Frank Wesson "First type", as per photo, aprox 2000 made C1859 to 1863 or 64. Cal 22, 32, 38 & 44 rimfire. Majority were iron frame although there were some brass frame sporting models. Available as Sporter or Military Carbine. Military was 44 rimfire with 24" barrel.

Kitteridge & Co supplied 151 Military Carbines to the U.S. Government shortly after Gettysburg in July 1863.

Sorry don't know how much they weighed.

I have just purchased a book off Ebay on Black Powder Rfiles that has a section on the rifles of Frank Wesson.  When it get here I'll have that additional resource, and yes I have seen the picture added here before.  If there are some "newer" photo's that the groupe would find of interest I'll post them.

What I'm interested in is what rifle offerings were available.  Surly most of the early 'small' stuff like the 32-20 and the 'rimfires' but I do wonder if any of the 40's and possibly the 45-70 was something offered in the 1880's and 1890's before the "switch"  >:( over to smokeless.
