shot size seperator?
« on: January 17, 2009, 05:02:46 AM »
I have about 3 bags  (3 x 25#) of shot, different sizes but mostly 8, 7.5, and 6 all mixed together. Bags rotted and I scooped up all I could. Was wondering if anybody makes an inexpensive seperator of any kind. Thanks,
Steve

I think your best bet would just load it and shoot it as  is. You will not get super great patterns but it will be good for small game hunting at close ranges. or just busting clay targets.

Thanks for the reply, you're probably right. I knew there was nothing unsafe about as I've mixed sizes before on purpose, but just wondering anyway.

I suspect anything you could buy to separate it would cost more than the value of the shot. You might however look around in hardware stores for screen wire and see if they have some with a size or sizes that might help some in separating it out.

If you knew someone in a good chem lab they probably have proper seives to do the job but they are very expensive so not something you could afford for the task.

BPI used to carry a seperator, but don't know if they still do. I looked at it but decided to just shoot the mixed shot.

Another possibility is if you knew somebody at a sand and gravel outfit, they'd have seives for testing gravel aggregates.

Why not go by your local hardware store, take a set of calipers, some know shot sizes with the diameter and size of the shot as advertised by the manufacturer, but the sections ofwire screen that you need-in about 2' squares and make a sieve of sorts to seperate it?
