OT - Cabela's Bulk Ammo
« on: January 16, 2009, 11:31:20 AM »
I was looking through Cabela's website and noticed their bulk ammo.
You can purchase 100 rounds of several different cartridges and get a free ammo box (15 bucks to just buy the box).

After running the math (and discounting their "free" ammo box), the bulk is more expensive than factory ammo!!
Do people just hear the word bulk and instantly buy it assuming that they are saving money?????

The 45-70 ammo is made by Ultramax, and is the cowboy load you can buy per box of 20 for 32.99.  It's 35.99 per 20 when you buy "in bulk".
The way I figure it, I can go buy a milsurp ammo box for 5 bucks and get 5 boxes of good factory remington 405gr totaling 162.00.  Looks like I would save 13 dollars and get better ammo by doing it myself.  The .270 ammo was the same way, except I'd never heard of the manufacturer.

And the ammo choice is pretty bland on those.  You want a soft point or FMJ?

I do buy most of my ammo at cabela's, but only because they are closer to where I live than any other sportring goods store, and even wal-mart. the $1.50 i would save at wal-mart gets burned as diesel in the chevy.

needless to say, i'll keep buying in boxes of 20 to save money (as strange as that sounds).

Must be a bulk sale marketing ploy that works

You'll see this occasionally at retail stores on other items besides ammo.

I noticed that about Cabela's a while back. I figured the same as you guys: most people read BULK and think it must be a better deal.

Unfortunately for me, Cabelas is one of the few places to buy S&B 8mm ammo. If I stock up, though, it will also be 20 at a time

I often spend carefree hours comparing various purchase prices on firearms related products and have found that it pays to shop carefully. Cabela's is a very nice place to start and once in a while they'll be competitive on ammo, once in a while.

Amen,
I've been doing business with Midsouth for over 23 years, quality outfit with outstanding prices and no hassle ordering.  I always check them first, and usually end  up buying there if they have it...

All the more reason to reload your own! Why paint yourself into a corner
worrying about way overpriced factory ammo when you can reload your
own that is more times often than not better suited to the type of shooting
and hunting that you might like to do? You could do this with a classic
Lee Loader for less than $25.

Or you could buy it even cheaper from Midsouth and by supporting those who support this site you might get to keep it around for longer and save yourself money at the same time.

You'd better believe it, Midsouth kick's Midway's butt when it comes to pricing, their regular prices are better than Midway's sale prices, and they're a GBO sponsor ta boot!!  ;)

I go to Cabela's for reviews and highly detailed pictures, haven't ordered a thing yet.  They never have the best price on anything I want. But I frequently start there to figure out what I want before finding it somewhere else for a better price.

The folks at Midway are the nicest I've found anywhere when dealing with them on the phone too. I ordered a .22 mould that they have made as a special order from Lee some time back and the lady I talked with took the time to explain all the details to me so there was no misunderstanding on my part. Then to place the order I used my Cabelas Visa card.

GB,
I meant no disrespect to Midsouth or to you with the link to Midway. I buy a lot
of my supplies from Midsouth. They are nice folks. They have great prices.
I have never had a problem with them. Fast friendly service. I highly
recommend them. That being said, in my opinion Midway's site has better
product pictures and details. Also it has customer reviews that I find helpful.
By all means we all should support the sponsors here whenever possible.

I know this is a little bit of a hijack, but I have to say that my order I just received from Midsouth was great. Midway is almost local for me, so I can pickup items when I am in town and avoid shipping. I don't have to pay tax at Midsouth though, and the items I ordered was still less with shipping than I could buy at Midway-namely those Varmint nightmare/Dogtown bullets. When I placed the order on Wed, I was expecting delivery next week. I got it Friday! 2 Days and it was here. The last thing I had shipped from Midway (before they allowed pickup) took 3 days. Great service. I have Grafs and Midway close by, so ordering is hard for me to justify, but all of my mail order will be through Midsouth now if they have what I need. Thanks, Billy
