I must be nuts
« on: January 15, 2009, 11:42:57 PM »
It's -23 and I'm heading for final deer camp of the yr our record for today is -24 but it should be all the way up to -12 by day break. I love hunting this time of yr with the snow camo as that stuff really screws up a deer compared to all other camo. I've had deer many times within a few feet and as long as you don't make eye contact and they don't smell you it's like they are looking right thru you. Today may only be a couple hour walk this morn down thru the creek bottom to check for tracks. I got a 3 gal stock pot full of wild turkey soup and fresh corn bread should be good and hot by noon.Kurt

You are nuts, but I hope you get a deer.  That way you can warm your hands inside it.

Down here in the south its supposed to be in the mid 20's for the first time this year...  I've only seen single digits onetime here and that was about 15 years ago.... I couldn't imagine negative temps...

I'm taking my 6 year old grandson out this afternoon for a short hunt.  It's supposed to be in the teens here tonight.  That's cold for FL.

When I lived in Illinois I used to be close to that hard core.....

I remember drinking lots of water, it kept me warm in the stand. Also you pee in the empty bottles and keep your hands warm until the yellow stuff starts to freeze! 8)

Last year the thermometer at camp that morning said 18 degrees in Texas! We usually would ride our cabless gator part of the way to the deer stand, but we took the truck instead. Got to my deer stand and praised the glory of propane and propane accessories. Not a shiver. By 9am, I had taken all my coats off!

Gotta love that propane!

I saw 22 this morning.  Thats cold for Texas, but we were spared the worst of this cold front.
22 is cold, but I have seen it much colder.

Enjoy the hunt!!

Yep Kurt, that is cold.  But we cant get them from the couch I always say.  We had -4 here in PA.  I was thinking about what it would be like to hunt today.  Then while driving I noticed a deer up a hillside in the woods.  Stood out like a soar thumb.  I like hunting with snow.  All we got now is small game till feb 7.  Probably go tomorrow morn with my oldest for squirrel and rabbit.  I'd wish you luck, but heck your already hunting, and I'm working,......well sort of. ;D  Lunch time!

I don't think it was as cold until some knucklehead thought of this windchill stuff........11 degrees on my thermometer this AM, then the newsman factored in wind chill....I almost went back home.

If it wasn't for the geese, 'yotes & the occassional p-dog, this weather would be almost intolerable.   ONe day snow & ice, the next day slush and sunny.
Will that bow kill an elk?     Sure.....but arrows are much more effective.

Sure it's cold, but I'll take it over those mid 30 damp days. The dampness goes right through me quicker than this cold dry weather. I would question the wisdom of taking a 6 year old out in this weather.

It was actually -32 when I got to camp. We had 1 herd of about 20 come thru late afternoon but no shots fired instead of coming down the creek bottom they went down along the river and crossed into the non huntable forest preserve. :'( I'm heading back this morning it's a balmy +10. 8)Kurt

Ya, mother canceled our hunt this morning.... should be warmer this afternoon.  We have -4 right now! Good luck Kurt.  Hate those non huntable areas.  Low deer sightings around here, but any day can drive by State correctional inst. and see the deer grazing within 100 ft of No tress signs.  Them deer wised up fast when it was built.  Found their "refuge" in there.

Default,...I see guys like you walking around in their shorts, and such.   Ya thought they were crazy too.  But in the back of my head I figured they were from colder areas.

Burrrr!

minus 41 here...

Show off !!!  :P

The coldest I ever got was when the thermometer was about 10 degs and my friend and I were on our bellies in what used to be a cornfield waiting to get a shot on a nice fat coyote... he was about 700 yards out and we couldn't get him to call in any closer... Come to find out he was 1/2 way between us and a nice flock of turkeys lol.  By the time we realized that and gave it up for the day, the frost and ice had melted due to my body heat and soaked though my clothes lol... That was a COLD 1/2 mile walk back to his house :D

Been there and still do it if the season is getting short.  Right now our weather is in the 50's and the next few days look about as good.  We have had our share of the 20+ below this year as well.  That's what I like aboout Montana, just wait and it'll change.  Heard on the radio the other day we have the honor of the largest temp. swing in a 24 hr period, over 100* swing.  Now that is real Chinook weather.  DP
