I was just talking to my nephew today at our deer camp, and he was showing me his 45-70, and telling me how the last deer reacted being shot at 40 yards.

He said she flopped over instantly on her back with all fours sticking straight up, and let out a slight moan, and then slowly her legs lowered to the ground, and never kicked.

He said he's shot huge hogs that he said looked like a black dot with his open sights, and never had a miss, or have one to run off.

He claims when he hits it, the hog goes down, never to get up again!

I've heard his stories, and just like this thread, he can't say enough good things about it!

Gotta get me one, is all I can say!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

blucollar,

AtiLaw really has a way with words and he really hit the nail on the head with his comparison of the 45-70 with women!
Being a history buff of sort`s I had read many book`s and articles regarding the use of the 45-70 in it`s heyday! Well the more I read the more I thought I needed a 45-70 for hunting and target shooting.
I started to go "whole hog" and buy a Sharp`s or Rolling Block  but then I decided just to go into this in a more economical manner! So this was back several years ago  and I bought two 45-70`s in the Handirifle`s and gave one to my brother. These 45-70`s have accounted for several deer and are fun to shoot! They can become a habit as I now have a 1895 Marlin in the 45-70!
Up until recently I have used only factory ammo, now I am reloading my own which adds another track to pursue with the old 45-70!

I have loaded 150 grain collar buttons (for rabbits), 250 grain Barnes hollow points (coyotes), 300 gr #2 alloy castes (white tails close up), 410 gr cast (tapered profile for black bear and white-tails further out), 500 grain cast round nose (for bear and tradition - it was the original), and 550 grain flat nosed hard cast (because I just ain't convinced them T. Rex's are extinct).  All in the same cartridge and fired from the same rifle, a Buffalo Classic.

Anyone know another cartridge you can get this out of?

Maybe a good 12ga as long as it's not to far out!

Tom, ya know better den that.  Da .45-70'll split frozed firewood at 300 yards, Da 12 ga. aint gonna do it.
(get ready for the best "Yooper" word yet.)  If'n ya git it UNTHAWED, the 12 may smack it at 50 yards.

Everyone stay warm this winter,

Pete

Not sure I'd try a coyote at 100 yards with a 12 ga. Or a Whitetail at 250.  Or a bear at any range, even with a slug gun (which I have).

Kevin, why wouldn't you shoot a black bear at 30 yards with a .12 ga. slug?  I would in a heartbeat.

Oddly enough Eastern NC has some of the largest black bears on earth.  Prefer not to take any chances in bullet choice. 550 gr flat nose takes em down fast.

At one time in my life, I was going to move to the Elizabeth City area.....Sometimes I wish I did.  And Yes, I'll take my .45-70 over a 12 ga. any day of the week.  I love your bays, marshes and mountains.  And right now, your above zero temps!!

Boys don't under estamate the old 12ga.
With the right slugs she can hit at 150 and 3" #4 buck with the right choke will drop a yote in it's tracks at 75.
I wouldn't be afraid to take on a black with a 12.
Granted not at the same distance as a 45-70 but far enough to keep me safe.

petemi I think you and ATLaw are trying to mess with me with them there words you all are useing.
As far as the fire wood at 300, nope don't think it will happen, but cut that distance in have and don't bet against it!
The old 12 has shown me a thing or two over the years.

I will say I took more groundhogs this past year with #4 buck than I did with a rifle!

Most of the coyote shootin around here is in swamps and heavy brush.  Prefer a rifle that sends one projectile through a clear line of sight. Prefer one that does lots of damage because I don't want a wounded predator getting away from me in the swamps and ending up hurting some kid that thinks they found a hurt dog. 45-70 DRT every time or a clean miss.

Up around Elizabeth City is where they got the 890 pound black a few years ago.  God awful monster.
