Will NEF quit making the handi anytime soon?
« on: January 14, 2009, 07:30:56 AM »
I really am wanting to buy a 45/70 handi-rifle but I can't afford a new one right now.  I was wondering if you guys thought they would be phasing out the .45/70  in 2009.

Since that's probably their best/most popular chambering, I doubt it.  There are tons of used ones out there too.

For my money the .45-70 is the best they make.  They'd better not quit them till I can get 2 or 3 more.

Got to catch up with Tim!!!

The 45/70 is my must have!   After I get mine they can quit, and that way my Handi's will just increase in value! ::) :o
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

New in that it has been referred to as NEF for quite awhile. Old in that it is the ORIGINAL name of the company.

Ok Harrington and Richardson.  I just type NEF because it's easier!

I heard a rumor they were quiting all manufacturing of 45 caliber barrels to focus on other calibers.

I hope they don't quit!  It may be next fall before I get to buy a .45-70.  I think the handi is the best gun for the money you can get.

So now it would be Remington/H&R or would that be Remington/Marlin/H&R? ???

Technically Remington/Marlin/H&R, Marlin has a link to H&R or their site, but I don't think there's anything on the Remington site other than press releases related to H&R.

Why do a lot of sites list the handi's as discontinued?  Heck, if you go to h&r's site & hit the .500 buy on-line, it's not even a recongnized model # in that system.  Just curious.  Not trying to start anything.

If you go onto the Reminton site, go to the very bottom right and click the little down button that says other sites, you'll see both a H&R and a Marlin link.  Try it out: www.remington.com

It makes #2 Kurt. The .30-30 from PD shoot #1 is the one my friend owned and was #1. I got the .22 Hornet for the specific purpose of making it a .25-20 and that's happening now. I had a BC but didn't keep it long.

That's what I saw also, I have a 500 and was thinking about getting a 45/70. I see the BC listed and a thumbhole stocked stainless with a 24 inch barrel. Anyone think the thumbhole stainless would shoot?

Maybe you need to look around a little, RR shows a couple pages of in stock H&Rs, they have 25 BCs and 45-70 Handis in stock, no .500s tho, Bud's has a bunch too.  ;)

Yup!

Since the ownership has changed, has the quality of the barrels improved? I've been thinking of building a shooting tower on my place to rifle hunt deer out of. If I build it I'll have about 500 yards in all directions to shoot and was thinking I'd like to do it with a 45/70. I don't think my 500 has the accuracy for the task. If I got a 45/70 it would be scoped so I'm wondering which would be best with a scope, the BC or the Stainless Ultra?

The change in Marlin/H&R ownership has little to do with the barrel production since Marlin has been making most barrels since 2007 and continues to do so. Ilion has new equipment and manufacturing processes in place, so firearms should be better than Gardner produced, they also have a new wood manufacturing facility, but no one has yet reported an Ilion marked firearm. But the 45-70 wouldn't be my first choice for shooting up to 500yds at game, I'd go for a 25-06 or .280.  ;)

I probably wouldn't shoot that far but I might be shooting into brushy areas and thought the heavy and slower bullets would do better than the high velocity bullets. In the early morning or late evening light, I might not see all branches in the way. Not like I want to purposly shoot into a thicket, just want a little insurance.  I had a .338 at one time and it was a bruiser. I wouldn't think twice about that gun shooting long distances.
There is just something I want to do with a big bullet and like I said I don't think the 500 will be much help past 100 yards with it's accuracy.
I'm a 98% bowhunter and have been for the last 37 years but love the guns yet. There's plenty of people that like to tresspass around here and I thought about making the tower stand as a deterent. They'd never know if they are being watched or not with the tower stand being so visable from the location it will be.
