Sticking cases
« on: January 13, 2009, 08:46:06 AM »
Hello all

I am new to handi rifles and picked up a 223 bull barrel today at the local pawn shop.Looks like new,any how I cleaned her up and started to zero her in I had a few old 223 rounds laying around and fired them. Then I got over to a box of white winchester 55grain.Noticed she wouldn't extract the first round after being fired. So i put a round in and ejected it before i fired the weapon. What I noticed is she want eject the brass after being fired. So what do you think I didnt have the problem with the Remington loads I shot. I all so noticed this box of winchester looks like it been on a shelve for a while.I checked the serial number and this is a 2003 model

Thanks

I'd try cleaning the chamber real good.
If the rifle has been sitting around it's probably dirty. :-\

The case might eject before firing but when it fires it will swell to fill the chamber.
If there is any crud in there it will stick it.

Hope it helps.

From the FAQ and Help Section thread started by Duce (look above in the brown section) Look and Read this thread and you'll ingest lots of info.

From Quickdtoo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to GBO! Basics for FTE, too hot hand loads, Milsurp, dirty or oily chamber or ammo will all cause stuck cases. Clean, dry chamber and ammo is paramount. Next is polishing of the chamber which is standard procedure for any ejector equiped barrel, can be done with a patch wrapped bore mop chucked in a drill, use flitz, JB bore compound or any fine metal polish, just polish it a couple minutes changing the patch and adding polish frequently. You can also use a fired case with a screw stud stuck in the flash hole and chucked in a drill.

Ejector tuning may be required, R&R the ejector using the ejector conversion info in the FAQ and Help sticky, place a BB ahead of the ejector spring to increase ejector pressure, polish the ejector and housing before reassembly, use a dri-lube like Hornady One shot or Elmer's Slide-All.

Another option to deal with those rifles that stick an occasional case just when you thought you had the problem fixed is to cut a notch just big enough for the tip of a pocket knife blade to flick the shell out. There are pics at the bottom of the page at Fred's link below. A dremel burr will do the job very easily.

If you still have stuck brass, there could be a serious issue with the chamber that only a trip to H&R will cure, but I've not had a problem like that with any of my 30+ barrels.

I agree with spanky.  Clean the chamber real good and make sure it is dry.  Mine still sticks every so often, but it's gotten better.  It only does it if there's been any build up of some kind.

Thanks so much
Called H&R and they said sounds like brass problems so I tried remingtons and ejected just fine.So I am going to attempt the bb trick and also polish the chamber as well.I guess I will read the bb trick over again I am not sure I understand how to take it all apart.

Thanks

The Tip-Up Rifle permanent conversion to extractor link in the FAQs and Help sticky shows how to disassemble the ejector, it's very easy to do.

Looks like it makes since I only need to drift out rear pin and then I can pull out extractor and polish then put BB in top of spring and reinstall correct. Also what should i use to polish the extractor with.

Thanks

Also one last question does it matter how I drift out the pins and if so which way would I drift them out if muzzle is facing to the left

Thank You

Either way works, they're standard roll pins, no splines like on the frame.  ;)

I hate to say it AGAIN, Extractors don't have that problem.  I'll never own another ejector.  The only one I have left is my SS '06 and that's getting changed out real soon.  It's funny, but my thumb and forefinger always seem to work on those cartridge cases.  If you want to look like an idiot, just carry a cleaning rod around with you to knock the empty out.  The biggest problem is you never know when or if they're going to stick.
