OT Free Digital Camera Card
« on: January 13, 2009, 02:06:13 AM »
I bought the wrong card for my camera.  It's an unused 4 GB HP Photosmart L1878A.  If anyone on this forum can use it I'll mail it free.

I just hope someone can put it to work.

You're all great people.

The description doesn't tell a computer dummy like me enough to know. Can you post a photo or a link to it for me to look it?

Bill, I'm the computer dummy.  The camera is new and I'm not real familiar with it, but I'll try a pic with something in it to give you an idea of size.  Give me a few minutes and I'll try it.

That sure looks like what my DC takes. Here is the image.

Mine measures just a fraction over 0.9" wide and just the barest fraction over 1.2" tall. If that's the dimensions I'd like to give it a try and if it's not right then I'll offer it back up to someone else.

If the dimensions tho are as above I'm pretty sure it should work in mine and has four times the capacity of the card I have now.

On the back side from that shown in the photo above are there nine gold plated contacts with the ninth being set lower than the other eight on the corner that is cut at an angle?

That would be a standard SD card (Secure Digital) used by many digital cameras.  I'll bet your camera uses a CF card (Compact Flash).

A very kind and generous offer by you petemi, and GB, a great grab by you...

That said, you mean you can take your own pictures and then put them in a COMPUTER!!! Where does the film go?

Wow!! what will they think of next. Can you ever get them out? If they are exposed to light do the negatives get destroyed?

I would post a picture of me trying to do this but I don't know how. Some helpful souls here have posted tutorials on how to do that in the past, however I could not understand what they were saying. I have come to the sad realization that if you try to explain something and use words that the recipient does not understand or has never heard, the directions are virtually unintelligible to him...

The computer has some funny little holes in the front and I jammed the film in there.  Nothing happened.  Sounds like we have the same problem.  I don't know, Andy, but I'm thinkin' you and I need to go back to grade school.  How about next September?

How's Tim get away with all the fancy computer stuff????.  I mean he's borderline oldfartittudimus too!!!!  Maybe he got left back enough times in school that the technology finally caught up with him ;)  Don't believe that for a minute.....he was probably teaching the teachers.

There are 4 or 5 different cards that are in common use.  The SD (secure digital card)  that is shown in the picture is by far the most common.  If you have a Sony, or Fuji camera, they each take their own type of card.  I'm sure there are others too.   I should say on the camera near where the card goes the type of card it takes.

PM sent with my address Pete and thanks.

My computer has a variety of holes in front to stick film of different sizes in. The only problem is figuring out which hole what size flim goes into. Yeah I've gotten it wrong a few times. Luckily it doesn't go in too far to pull back out. If that hole were deeper I'd be in trouble.

For my first DC I bought the wrong card even with help from the folks who sold it to me. Reckon they didn't now anymore than me. But fortunately they took it back and gave me the proper one for it. I'd still not know what to buy for it but my newer one uses that card apparently. Again thanks Pete.

Bill, You are more than welcome.  I just wanted to give something back to the people have helped me.  I never realized it would be you, Bill.  You have given me so much, I am happy to return a little bit of it.

Hope it works for you,

Pete

I'm pretty sure it will work. The photo of it looks about as identical to what I have for my camera as is possible other than it's black and mine's white. Every detail of it appears identical down to measurements. I guess I'll know for sure only after sticking it in and taking some photos tho. If it doesn't work I'll be happy to pass it along to someone like you that it will work for. Still I'm as sure as I can be it will work short of it getting here and proving it will.

Sounds like some of you folks could use some of my on hand computer experts. Which of my grandkids do you want me to send you? They know it all (computers, ipods, cell phones, ect.) And dam-it they are right all the time. That is who handles all my electronics problems.

Gentlemen,

There is one little issue about SD cards that you need to know.  There are regular SD cards and there are HC (High Capacity) SD cards.  Your electronic device must support HC to be able to read the card.  It will fit an Secure Digital slot but may not read it.  The pic shows an SDHC

That's what my problem was.  Bills camera takes the same number so it should be good to go.

Bill, I'm packing it up right now, and including the original invoice in case there is a problem.  It'll be on its way today.
