Aperture sights for hunting handgun
« on: August 22, 2003, 10:07:09 AM »
Anyone have information on aperture sights on a hunting handgun? Pros or Cons. I have found it difficult lately to shoot my Ruger SBH and read an article that aperture sights were easier to shoot with failing eyes. The author said he shot better groups with the aperture sight than standard. He said it was easier because the shooter did not have to pay attention to the rear sight. The eye naturally centers the front and all you have to do is line the front on the target. Any info would help.

For the aperture principal to work the aperture needs to be close to the eye. The closer the better. Over 3" or so away and you rapidly begin to lose all benefit of it. Same thing for size of aperture. The larger it becomes the less it helps.

This is for rifles not handguns. Best to forget it in my opinion.

I have the aperture sights from One Ragged Hole sights, on my Ruger SRH, and my GP100, had them also on my Ruger RH.  They really work great, come in 2 sizes, I have the larger size on my revolvers, and they really improved my shooting, and they're great for hunting. Just go to the site for One Ragged Hole sights. I think they were $25.00 with shipping and all.  Good luck.

I have to argee with Graybeard. I tried the One Ragged Hole sights and my groups really opened up. Couldn't hit diddly-squat with them and you know how big a diddly-squat is! Went back to my regular sights and did a whole lot better. Then I shot a Vaquero and did just as good. That ain't supposed to happen when you're over 50 is it? Now, if I could just see to read . . .
