Handi in 357 mag

I was in the local gun shop Thursday. I wanted to order a Handi with laminated stock in 357 mag. I was told this caliber isn't made and never was. Tell me this isn't true. I would like one to go with my GP 100 in this caliber. Was i told the truth or not? Thanks for any help.

Sure you can get the Handi in 357 Mag , dought that you can order one with a lam stock unless you happen to find a dealer that has axcess to a wholesaler of a special run .

What you can do is get a 357 with a palletwood stock and change the wood to what you want .

  Stimpy is spot on correct. IIRC or Unless someone organized a special run this caliber, it has never been offered in a lam stock config. I'm sure it was just a "misspeak" from the counter help. They most certainly ARE available and quite popular!

 Buy it with the pallet wood or plastic stocks and either buy new lam from one of the supporters here or bide your time and grab a used set.  Don't worry, they pop up regularly on the classifieds here.  ;D

I  am not 100% on this but I didn't think you could buy a new .357 or .44 with wood stocks, Syn only on the SB1 frame. I've been wrong a least once before thou. But they are deffinatly made. ;D

BTW my FFL is haveing a hrad time getting any new handies, He says that it because of time a year, People doing inventories and taxes, give it a week or so and things should be normal again. 8)

 Bob, I stand corrected and you are completely correct. I just picked up the 2009 H&R/NEF catalogue and the wood 357 and 44 are not catalogued. Only the synthetic models now shown available.

 JERRIES has some, not sure what your looking for...

  When I got my 357 Mag 3 or 4 years ago The gun shop had 3 or 4 In Stock.
 One had cim lam stock I bought on sight. It or stock is NOT for sale NEVER!

There have been reports that the wood 357mag was made for a while the end of 2007(probably for Indiana), and of course those of several years ago when it was available as a complete rifle, but in between is was only available as an accessory barrel (much to everyone's dismay  :-\) up until 2008 when it was brought back as an SB1 in the new style synthetic stock targeting the Indiana pistol chambered rifle deer hunter market.  ;)

As Marv said, they've made many special order limited production models with different stocks, my 357mag has a checkered straight grip stock on it, but I made it that way as anyone can, all H&R stocks fit all of their SSI, SB1 and SB2 frames.  ;)

That is correct, the current models have no sites and are drilled, tapped and supplied with a scope mount...

I have been told by NEF customer service within the last month that they will put pistol caliber barrels 357, 44 or 45 on an SB1 frame.

I wouldn't rely on that, they're infamous for misinfo, or maybe misunderstanding questions asked of them. I know for a fact they wouldn't put the 45LC barrel on any SB2 frame made before 1999, let alone an SB1 frame, I personally talked with Gordon, the CS manager at Gardner on that question. They will fit a 45/410 barrel to an SB1 frame tho. It's always possible Remington has changed their policy, but I wouldn't hold my breath, I'll get back to you if that is true or not, I can verify it one way or the other, I asked Marlin that question last year when the SB1 357 and 44mags were first unveiled, the answer was no.  ;)

The .357 barrels I got a while back actually had SB2 on the barrel.

Most centerfire rifle barrels are marked SB2, that's not unusual and has nothing to do with the frames which aren't marked.

This might be a teeny bit off topic...?

Am not sure whether or not a factory 357 mag was ever made with a lam stock, but a factory 357Max was. About 5 yrs ago I bought one (used) and then about 3 yrs ago I sold it... it is one that goes on my "I wish I had kept that one." list...  :'(

I did keep the stock set however...  ;D

There are 2 stores here in town that have .357 Handi's that I've seen. Both synthetic stocks. One was Gander Mtn and the other is a Sportsman's Warehouse. My favorite Pawn Shop/Gun Store can also order them.

Ok, I got an answer, your statement is partly right, they will fit 357mag and 44mag barrels to some SB1 frames, but there is a serial number requirement, so the only way to know is call them at this time, when I learn the criteria, I'll post it. The 45LC barrel is not an option for SB1 frames, I suspect that's because it's too easy to make a 454 Casull or 460S&W out of it which would be hazardous on an SB1 frame.  :o

I am glad that remington is being more rational as to what can be fitted to specific frames and I suspect in the future SB1 and SB2 frames will be clearly identifiable. I merely quoted customer service

We all agree that SB2 frames are more flexible however there are millions of EXISTING SB1 frames that can now be SAFELY fitted with 357 and 44 barrels. THIS IS HUGE.

I just found out today that mine is eligible.

With respect to maybe in the future there should only be SB2 frames that is a business decision. Companies fight to reduce their costs by cents on an item not six or seven dollars as may be the difference here. SB1 and SB2 frames at a minimum need to be clearly identified.

.357 and .44 mags on SB1 frames... my mouth is watering!  :D

I would love to hear more on this possibility. I have been thinking of a .38 Special handi for some time now for VERY economical target practice/plinking, especially in these times. However having to dedicate an SB2 frame for this purpose seems overkill in price and safety. I recently picked up a 2005 model 20 gauge Pardner at a local pawn shop for $65. If I can send it in for a .357 mag barrel, it will come out much cheaper than buying a new one ($221+FFL transfer at Bud's) and have the wood stocks vs the cheap black synthetic ones.

If you want a 357 or a 44 barrel call NEF customer service with your serial number and ask if your frame is eligible. I know enough to know that many more are eligible than is assumed.
