new/used savage stainless barrel in .308 win
« on: January 08, 2009, 05:38:48 PM »
hello;

where can i find a replacement savage stainless barrel in .308 win.  have a model 16 in .243 win.  factory barrel just fine with me.  the 243 factory barrel i now have is a good barrel, so i see no reason for any other barrel.

the 243 barrel is a sub-one inch barrel with 43.2gr of 4831sc.  not worth a hoot if you shoot a nice deer at just over 200yards and it runs off.  made a good hit, saw/heard the bullet hit, could not find the deer.

thanks for any input

This is a part of hunting learning and saying with in your and your equipment's limits.

I have had and seen deer shot with a 12 ga slug at no more then 40 yards and run off and not be seen again.

If you feel you must have a 7.62X54 then you may be better off buying a new / used savage in the long run.

The 243 is a great larger varmint round and it will be OK for deer with in 150 yards or so maybe further with some of the newer bullets. The biggest trouble with the 243 is it used lighter bullets and they can be blown off target in just a light wind
at longer ranges

yon will still need a gun vice, a barrel nut wrench and a set of go-no go head space gages.
