silver bear 7.62 8m1 'effect' bullets
« on: January 07, 2009, 10:10:16 AM »
i have a box of 7.62 bullets by silver bear. on the box is printed, 8M1"effect"
they are 124 grains and have a small nipple, thats hollow ( no lead inside ) at the tip of the bullet but it is part of the copper jacket

does anyone know anything about these bullets. i want to take them apart and use the bullets themselves for handloads in my 30-30 contender.

I'm curious about those bullets myself! I've shot a bit of Silver Bear in .223 and 7.62, FMJ stuff only. Haven't seen the bullets you speak of. Wonder if they are some sort of frangible?

the 8M3 series are the frangibles. they are a HP that is designed to break apart. the 8m1 are also boxed as 'match' . oddly enough i have a box that has 'match' and 'effect' printed on the same box ( from the ULY factory ) i checked Silver Bear's site and they do not list a part number for the ammo i have.

I've shot this ammunition in a CZ527 carbine and found it not to be as accurate as other loadings. Also bear in mind that the bullet diameters for these projectiles should be .310"  Whilst this difference isn't likely to blow your gun up (I shoot .310 in a .308 bore all the time) it may be something you may want to think about

ok, here is what i did find.. the 8M1 'effect' bullet is a hollowpoint. the hp is covered by the copper nipple. 8M1 and 8M3 are design designations. 3 is frangible and 1 is hp. the idea behind the M1 is that the nipple allows for penatration of a solid but upon hitting harder objects ( bone ? ) then the nipple colapses into the hp and it encourages the expansion of the hp cavity. boxes of ammo also marked "match" have closer tolerances and less spread of grain weight.

now thats what i know, here's what i think... silver bear may be trying to overcome some poor ballistic from the AK or whatever other gun that shoot this stuff ( 7.62x39/54 ) by some re-engineering of the function of a bullet.. the samples i have to measure 124 grains, .310 diameter with almost no deviation.
how they work on a "target" is another matter, but thier grouping would need to be checked out first.
