Bear Bait Exchange or Trade?
« on: January 04, 2009, 11:42:09 PM »
Has anyone on here traded or exchanged bear bait with a board bro?   I have began to stock pile bait already for the 2009 Fall season here in MN and there is a good chance I might have bait in excess. I have a very good steady supply of honey and molasses as well as cereal and apples. Would anybody here in MN that has a good meat scrap or doughnut connection want to trade some bait?  Just an idea to throw out there.

mn bear,
I have been stocking up on bait for a few months also.  Hope to have 3-5 hundred pounds saved up by 09 season.  Right now everything I have is from freinds cleaning out freezers.  I normaly mix my bait about half and half with dog food.  If you have a bunch of extra closer to season, I may be interested in buying some.  I'll look you up closer to september.  Where are you located? I'm in the st. cloud area.

They like peanut butter, cottage cheese, anything that stinks like steelhead & salmon carcasses, rotten meat, fruit:apples, etc;there's always www.bearscents.com  etc. We're not allowed to use any bait in ca.My Manual of  Game Investigational Techniques says  Anise (pimpinella) is attractive to bears.

I just talked to a guy yesterday & he said he had great luck with some 'over-ripe' sweet corn at his pile. He said he was able to buy some 'seconds' or lower quality from some growers.

I am going to try the fermented corn method this year, a board bro gave me the idea. I am going to take a 5 gal pail and fillit half corn and 10lb of sugar and the rest water and let it sit in the sun for a month. GOing to pour it all around the bait site.

Just talked to a local bar owner and she agreed to give me all her left over popcorn if I come and clean out the machine at the end of the night. Whats the best way to store popcorn? How long before it goes bad?

Hopefully you don't have to hit the bar after closing time to clean out the machine. That would be past my bedtime. I also get some bait by asking the relatives to clean out their freezers.

Just bought another atv today so I am gearing up for fall. I also found another great item to add to my bait sites. I work for a cereal company and I was recently working on the crunch berry line and came upon the "fines" that accumlate in the dryer. Its a lot like jello powder, only seems to be a lot sweeter. I think it will work well sprinkled over some pastries. I probably can get as much as I want to which is always good. Anybody else gearing up for fall bear season in MN?

I'm gearing up some. I won't know til June how I do on the MI permit though. I'm about up for a hunt. A few family members in MI may be about due too. Last weekend I towed up 8 barrels of bait. Four were chocolate candy & 4 cherries of the type that go into chocolate covered cherries. I was not able to get all chocolate. The cherries seemed O.K. much better tasting than a wild choke cherry. I just hope they keep through the summer well. They should be full of preservative. My plan was to get some bait before the August rush. I plan to also clean out the freezer & maybe look for some sweet corn towards fall if we get permits. I would look forward to sighting in the 300WSM again.

We do a little bear hunting in the NW U.P., it's a little South of Houghton in the 'Baraga Unit'. I have some time off towards the end of May, I may just look for some more bait to bring up. My partner seems to sell all the excess I bring up. I just saw on a MI outdoor site where they will reduce bear permits in the Western U.P. by 21% this year. It seems the bear numbers have been going down. I guess in the past they have offered more permits per sq miles of habitat compared to WI. Info went on to say WI offered less permits & had a higher success rate & heavier bears. Now I'm in the hunt for a large bear or no bear. If I don't get a permit this years that's fine.

'AREA 51' You may have more to worry about than an enraged bear! I'd bring a tinfoil hat & watch for bright lights in the sky.
