Handy question (new to forum)
« on: January 02, 2009, 07:23:32 AM »
This is my first post. I love my little handy rifles but I would like help with barrel floating. I have two rifles one is dedicated 45-70. The other is .243 and I have .308 to go with that receiver. When it comes to the forearm fit...What do I do to get the best accuracy? Try to float the barrels somehow or have pressure all along the barrel??? I have been reading different posts and all I have done so far is get real confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would get the 243 and the 308 each their own forearm and then do all the fitting for each barrel.
Each barrel likes their own thing and what works to make the 243 shoot well might make the 308 shoot like crap.
Some barrels shoot best with a little pressure at the end of the forearm, some shoot well with no pressure anywhere along the forearm, etc.
You just have to find out what works for each barrel.

I have re-stocked the origional .243 with a synthetic stock from NEF. The forearm seems to fit either barrel very tight except at the end. I can slide a piece of paper under forearm for about the first 3/4 inch
then barrel fits tight in forearm the rest of the way. The .243 barrel seems to shoot OK but the .308 is
not very accurate. I've read something about an "0" ring on the barrel lug...Is this supposed to keep barrel off the forearm???

 WELCOME!!!

The thing to remember is consistency, its very important. Free floating the barrel is one thing that works for many owners, but nor all. Bedding the forend is not done much, but it too can help. Forend fit to the frame is another place adjusting can change and enhance the barrels accuracy. Shooting with out the forarm is one way to see where your problems lie. Proper shooting position and trigger control are another two places accuracy can be enhanced. I am just touching on these points, as the FAQ's will have links and in-depth information to explain them. Give them a thourough read and come back and ask any questions you still are stumbling over.

Good luck,

Thanks to all for your help...I did some extensive reading in FAQ section an now I think I have a good starting point. We still have a couple of weeks to rifle hunt in Mississippi and since the .243 is shooting pretty good I probably won't mess with anything till after the rifle season is over. I want to try to  buy another forearm for the .308 and start from there. Thanks again!!!
