Author Topic: So far so good with Thompson Center service (Read 943 times)

I have previously posted a topic about my 7M-08 stringing for the 1st five shots or so and then shooting great. I called Thompson Center service today and since all the gunsmiths were busy I left a message. I called again about 1/2 hour later and talked to Ron. He told me that they do have this problem with some of their barrels and to send it in. They will ck it out and recrown the barrel or replace it if it will not shoot 1" to 1-1/2" groups. An hour or so later another gunsmith called and apologized for taking so long to get back to me (about 2 hours . . . not bad I thought). So I will be sending it down to them . . . we will see how it goes.

To say the least I have had several problems with the factory barrels from t/c. I had a 300 win mag that I sent back a total of three times because of accuracy problems. On the third time I request a new barrel in 7mm RM and thats what they sent me. I have also had problems with a 45 cal. muzzle loader barrel, it had the 1:20 twist in it. I sent it back and they sent me another one supposeably with a 1:28 twist. I shot it last week and it didn't shoot worth a penny. With the load and bullet that they said they were getting 1 inch groups with. I am going to play around with it some more to see what happens. No pune intended but I am a little gun shy about their factory barrels.

I have had great luck with the factory barrels. I have only had to send one back. It was a 14" 17HMR contender barrel that would not group. They recrowned it and sent it back. I have since shot many groups well under an inch at 100 meters with it, the best being 1/4". KN

Well, I sent my barrel in on Weds. and I called Thompson today to see if it arrived ok. The gunsmith told me that they had received it . . . checked it out. . . and a new barrel will be shipped out today or tomorrow. I really cannot complain with their service. Infact, I was so surprised that it was a done deal already that I forgot to ask what the problem was with the other one :lol:

I bought a 12ga Encore muzzleloader barrel, and after shooting several times, the forarm came off, I call TCARMS, and the said, sent it back,they would fix it, and have it returned in 4or5 days.... Its was too close to our turkey season, and i didnt beleive them also. so i tape the forarm to the barrel,and it worked fine... So, after turkey season, i sent it back, waited 2-3 MONTHS, and i finially called them, and it was laying on their work bench,, they said they would send me another barrel,,, they did, but it was the wrong barrel, so i called them, and they said , they would send me the correct barrel,,,after 2 weeks, i called them,and they said, they would call me tomorrow,about shipping the barrel, after 2 more weeks, i called them again, same answer, i called and asked for the complaint deptment, and i talked to the same person who was to send out my barrel, and he said he would call me tommorow again, now it is 2 weeks past that, ..... Anyone have any sugestions?

Well, my new (replacement) barrel arrived today. So the turn around time was really excellent. Now for the next question. When I put it back together I could put the pin (that holds the barrel to the frame) in with my fingers. It is not loose, but with every other Thompson I have had to tap it in with a screwdriver handle or something. This time I could get it in almost all the way with direct thumb pressure and only had to tap in the last 1/4". Any of you had this situation. I know what someone who makes the pins in larger sizes says . . . but it can't come out as the forend comes up on both sides. I will shoot it this weekend but just wondered what you think,

Most of mine are loose and can be pushed out by hand. A couple are tighter and require a hammer. (This is on my Contenders). Both my Encores can be easily pushed out by hand. I prefer them to be loose enough to push out by hand and I have never been able to see a difference in accuracy between the fits. My Encores shoot way better than I ever hoped for with a gun and I love pushing them pins out without a hammer.

Well, I shot the new barrel tonite. Of course the majority of my 15 shots were at 25 yds (5) and then about 8 more getting roughly sited in. Finally my last 2 shots were in the same, enlarged, hole. I was somewhat pleased, but I need to shoot somemore this weekend to "trust" the barrel. I also have Weaver scope mounts and I really do not like how they work as I am used to Leopolds. But, that has nothing to do with the Thompson. So I have have to say that I am (so far) still very pleased with Thompson's service . . . although I would be more pleased if the 1st barrel would have been what it should have been.
