One of two beer can mortars being built for christmas. Ill try the photobucket images again. If these dont work {again} maybe somebody can help me out again. Merry christmas to all you folks! My pal is hoping to get this one done for Christmas but lately all weve been doing here in Michigan is plow snow and more snow

If you dont think there is a santa clause, that originally was a round solid bar of machine grade bronze 2 foot long and 6 inches wide. He found it in an old barn. He got it for nothing. The machine shop that cut it in half so he could get two coehorns made said it was top dollar bronze. Where is my santa claus? He's like that, things just fall out of the sky and land in his lap. Things like that have never never happened to me. Anyways, I dragged him to Grayling about 5 years ago and got him hooked on blackpowder artillery. He loves shiny coehorns. ME TOO.

I like shiny things that go BOOM, too. That is a sweet looking coehorn. If that fell out of the sky into my lap; I'd be in a wheelchair.

I went to speedymetals and looked up the cost of bronze for a two foot long six inch wide solid round bar. He must have been right underneath santa's sled when it went by. Going to be a noisy christmas or New Years

Ok, that's what happened to that. Santa told me that there was an incident with the bronze round he was going to deliver to me for Christmas. I will contact you with my address so it can be forwarded. It's OK that it has been turned. I'll deal with that.

All joking aside. It looks Awesome! I'm sure he will have a blast with it!

at $ 8 per pound

ok serious again ,

TELL YOUR FRIEND TO SAVE EVERY CHIP HE MAKES FROM THOSE BARS ,
without mixing it with any steel scrap

it will be more then enough to melt and cast the piece of 2 inch bar he need for the trunnions ,
and then he will be sure to have the same color of the bronze also .
and for free , just a few bucks to the local blacksmith .

that could any local blacksmith do for him ,
just make an mold of plaster of paris .

just take an 2 1/4 inch dowel and grease it with a little axle grease before you pour the plaster .
when the plaster is hard turn the cowel carefully and pull it out and you have an finished mold for the bronze bars .

Beautiful.

I love the way most bronze/brass machines on a lathe; no stringy chips and easy to get a nice finish. I wish all my cannons were bronze. Steel and iron are good, but whenever I see a nice bronze gun, I can't help but want it.

Southwest of you here in Illinois we didn't get a ton of snow, but we got a freezing rain on top of a snow that is still causing some profanity.

This snow business is getting old fast. I used to enjoy it when I was younger, not anymore. At my brothers place outside of Charlevoix he's had over 7 feet already. Imagine having to shovel out a spot to shoot a mortar. HUMBUG!!!

I couldn't help but note the difference between Double D's 20 below temperature and my 70 degrees here in North Florida yesterday morning, that's a 90 degree difference. It has been up to 75 the last few days. I have been driving around the Apalachicola National Forest, which is just south of my place, in my Jeep CJ7 which has the top off, feels nice. Cold and snow are not problems here, hot miserable summers are.

Well, too many things interfered on getting the mortars ready to fire for Christmas and New Years. We are getting back on track with the winter projects. We are going to drag them out to a 2200 acre farm for shooting pretty soon

Another winter project. This is being built by a friend of mine. This is the USS Oregon {BB3} Great White Fleet. Launched June 1896. It would be nice to figure out a way for the big guns on this to be blackpowder. It would make for a nicer effect with the smoke and flame. Open to suggestions! Otherwise they are remote controlled C02 BB guns that turn on a radius. The turrets and the center section lift up. There is a 12 volt battery inside the hull that powers the control devices. Everything is remote controlled.

I don't know what caliber the guns are but use black powder loaded cartridges (.357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, any straight walled case.) It would be much easier to load and unload fixed charges that are physically robust. It shouldn't require much of a breech mechanism if you don't load bullets.

Its the setting them off remotely that seems to be a problem. The smoke and flame from a blackpowder charge is much more realistic than a C0 2 round. Although the C02 round is much more effective on snapping turtles if you have a pond where you raise ducks

I remember back in the early 60's Guns and Ammo magazine (I think) had an article about a remote controlled Missouri class model battleship that somebody had built. As I recall, the main guns were 45 cal, the rest 38 Spl and 22 LR. Would have been quite the toy in a backyard swimming pool but where would you take it to safely fire it?

I'll bet you could make a blowback system that would take care of the unloading process. It's the reloading process that I haven't figured out. But I'll be it can be done.

How big is the ship? Can the guns be elevated?

It can be set up to fire blanks, not cheap but could be done, there are people who have done this with radio controlled tanks,
using one of the semi auto blank firing pistols in 8mm. in England someone has fitted a real pistol to one of these, this would
be an issue here with the ATF.......

it would be fired on a private pond. Probably at snapping turtles that rip the legs off off ducks and then eat the rest of the duck afterwards. No the guns cant be elevated but they can be turned about 180 degrees. It would be nice to have a nice flash and a bang from blackpowder over the C02 bb guns. The boat is close to 6 foot long

A guy I work with has built RC submarines that fire torpedos with Co2 'engines.'

Might want to go with depth charges for those turtles.

Before you make anything RC that fires a projectile using gunpowder, study the laws concerning "remotely fired firearms." At least in CA, such things are not allowed.

Your sled type bed is longer than others I've seen, it looks good, I also like the detail you put on the tops of the cheeks. Looking forward to seeing some action pics when nature allows.
