WOW!
« on: December 16, 2008, 10:49:51 PM »
This place has everything! I joined a few days ago because I had a few questions about my NEF rifle but just now had a chance to go through the board. my main passion is catfishing. I fish mainly the Ohio river and its off shoots for big fathead and blue catfish. have fished all my life but been catfishing "hardcore" for about 8yrs orso and have a few good uns under my belt.

here are a couple of my better ones, both caught on cut skip jack herring using 8/0 gama octopus hooks on a abu 9000bg loaded with 65# power pro braid on a 7' surge cat rod

I fish mostly with cut shad and beef hearts(fresh if you find them).  We regulary catch them in the 20-40lb. range.  We let them go though, they are terrible to eat..They are full of the red oily meat.  Yuck.....I fish mostly on the Santee..Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie in beautiful South Carolina...

I have never fished them, but I have talked with a few guys that do.  Up here on the St. Croix river MN/WI border waters the guys use small bullheads (live) for bait.  I guess catching a 50+ pounder isn't all that uncommon and I believe that most/all of the guys let the big ones go as well.  I have been meaning to try it, but haven't had a chance to get out.  There are some guys that take charters out for a night for a reasonable price and a buddy has done that and had success so I may try that route rather than take a cold run at it myself.

Nice Fish!!

thanks for the replies folks...yeah I let almost everything go that I catch..if I get the itch to keep some ill usually keep a few flatheads or channels in the 5-10lb range..anything over that doesn't taste to good...plus Id like to give my kids the chance to go after some of them river giants later on. you mentioned bullheads as bait..those are some great bait for big flatties..one of my favorites! they live along time on the hook and give plenty of action..I also like using big gold fish and live bluegill, but in the summer months its tough to keep gills alive on the hook for very long...30-30..you live in the catfish mecca! Id love to go fish santee someday, that or go to WV and fish the James river.

Probably would work well up here as well, but we can't use native game fish or goldfish for bait as it is illegal and carries a hefty fine.  To me it should be legal to use small game fish for bait, as it would weed out some of the smaller ones and not introduce disease ridden rough fish (minnows) into lakes.  I guess they don't consider Bullheads a game fish as it is legal to use them.

yeah alot of states have that law about using native game fish..glad mine isnt one of them...also I dont understand why they wont allow you to use gold fish as most if not all gold fish you get from a bait shop can not reproduce...I am sure there are a few cases but not enough to where it would damage the local eco system.

We can't use brim or any gamefish , but most people do anyway.  Goldfish are a steep fine in our state.  I have a house on the Santee, we fish mostly near the cow pasture, Potato Creek, and the indian mound. If you're ever in the neighborhood, try those out.  That is where the records are caught.  I think Lake Marion had the record at one time for Arkansas blues.  I think it weighed in at over 109lbs.  That may have been broken by now, I don't know. Rocks Pond Campground once had one in a tank that weighed over a 100.  That was one mean looking fish.  They fed it dog food.

Santee is a great lake to fish but it is dangerous and catches many newbies off guard.  The lake is very broad and wide but very shallow.  The deepest spot I've found is near the dam 25-35ft.  The wind picks up in the afternoons and the waves can swamp small boats.  This along with the millions of stumps, cause problems. The lake was built during WWII and labor was short. They flooded timber land and left the trees there thinking they would rot. They're still there. You have to know the lake to travel at night.  I've seen many boats come into the landings with the foot knocked off of the motor.......I'll quit rambling...

Nice cats! I fish the Ohio river too around Cincinnati. Some big fish to be caught around there if you can find a time when the barges aren't running you out of the good spots.

not that my username would tell you, but to me cats are the king of fish.  used to do a lot of setlining but these days it is all rod and reel.  i do fish other species, but to me there's nothing like getting your knuckles ripped by a big ol flathead.  i came to this site while googling how to disassemble a navy colt i have, and ended up registering.  i wish i would have found this site long ago... here's a good flathead out of the colorado river in central texas by san saba... also you can make a 70 pounder taste like a 5 pounder by trimming all red meat and fat off the fillets.  cut the meat into sticks agross the grain of the meat and it fries up real nice.  course if you don't want to kill a biggun channel cats are plentiful almost everywhere.  tight lines....
