Frame Purchase
« on: December 11, 2008, 01:00:01 PM »
I found a frame for a Handi at a local yard sale, paid $15.00. Most of it's finish is worn or removed, so I'll use a spray and bake on finish for it. It's serial number starts with an HT so I believe it to be made in 2003, however there are no markings as to whether or not it's an SB-1 or SB-2 frame. It came in a bag, looks like an aborted trigger job. The hammer and trigger look overworked and the trigger guard is cracked as if a pin was forced. I could buy individual parts, but I was thinking that I might try to send it to H+R and have them replace the parts, put it together and at the same time have a barrel fitted. I'll give them a call tomorrow to see if they'll handle that for me. I'll also need a stock, probably buy their synthetic or maybe order one from Gunstocks. I also still need to pick a caliber for the barrel.

If the tang or bolt hole area is skeletonized, it's an SB2, the SB1 is solid around the hole, can't beat the price!  ;)

Sounds like a great start for a new rifle, I'd like to find a frame for 15 bucks. 8)

The bolt hole area is skeletonized so it's definitely an SB-2. Looking at the barrel choices I'm tossing around the .44 or .444. I know they had experienced accuracy issues in the past, but understand there may have been some improvement in these calibers recently?

Both are very accurate, the 2007 reintroduced .444 has a 1:20" twist, I got one of the first, if not THE first .444 barrel last May, it was tested at the factory with Remington's and both of Hornady's factory ammo and shot groups of 1¾" or less, and I've ran handloads of 240gr XTP, 265gr Hornady and 355gr Beartooths thru it with excellent accuracy.

Marlin started making the 44mag barrels early last year, and they have nice tight bores too, mine shoots the Hornady 225gr Leverevolution ammo into less than 2" at 100yds with the peep sight I put on it which is saying a lot for my old eyes!! ;D

Thanks Tim! I had heard they were better than they had been and those targets speak volumes. I have dies, case and bullets for both, but will most likely chose the .444.

You won't be disappointed!! ;) Be sure to have them do the free trigger job while they're at it, and use the updated barrel order form in the FAQs and Help sticky, it has the Ilion address on it and is a much smaller download than the one on H&R's site.

I ended up ordering the parts I need from Brownells. Once I have her back together I'll order a Stock from Gunstocks, then it's off to H+R 1871 for a new barrel. I'll save finishing the frame 'til last to avoid any scratches.

A bit of an update on this receiver project. I received all my parts this past week from Brownells and sat down to put it back together when I discovered one part that I had overlooked, the lifter spring. DUH! Well another order sent to Brownells and while I was at it I ordered replacement springs for everything. I don't know how much wear they've had so what the heck. The receiver is painted with a baked on Gun-Kote paint in dark earth, sort of a brownish olive drab color and I hope to order a timber laminate stock from Gunstocks to go with it. I'm still debating with myself over which caliber barrel to order. I had been wanting to do a cut down .500S+W 18" barreled brush rifle for some time, but the .44, .444, and .45/70 would also be great choices and I already reload for those three. Of course it's always fun to start up with something new.

45-70 would be my vote too, but I know ya got a 27" BC, so a .444 barrel would be nice, either a 22" blued or a 24" stainless for something different!! Be sure to post pics of the frame!! ;)

Merry Christmas,

I found a frame for a Handi at a local yard sale, paid $15.00. Most of it's finish is worn or removed

Heck, wish I'd stumbled onto an SB-2 for that! Got loads of parts and it would've given me a chance to try out my home-bluing again.
(Hopefully without vessel failure and solution all over the patio this time! :-[)

Definitely a good score! ;)

Thats a different look, think I like it.  Coat the stock the same and maybe some spider webbing and good to go.  I've got the 44 and 444, like em both.  Like the 45-70 too.  Take yer pick and you will be happy.  DP

I received the lifter spring today from Brownells and the receiver is back together and working fine. I did take a refresher look at Perklo's excellent downloads on Handi trigger work: http://perkloafm.com/downloads.html The assembly took less than ten minutes, hats off and a big thanks to Perklo! I measured the trigger pull and it is a heavy 5 1/2lbs., but as long as I'll be sending for a barrel I might as well ask them for a trigger job. The barrel and stock set may have to wait a bit as I just spent all my savings on ordering a new Marlin 1895 SDT.
