Fly-tying Supply Sources??
« on: August 17, 2003, 03:35:07 AM »
I'm just now starting to get into fly-tying: anybody know a good source for materials for this?   I've now got the basic tools:  interested in a few more materials now: hackle, hooks, etc.  LOW cost is a concern:  on-line sources or catalogs???   thanks!!

I go to garage sales and pick up "wool", yarn, phentex, threads, etc. I use the silver pull chain from lights or toilet mechanisms for "eyes".  My friends raise "wild turkeys" so I swipe shed feathers from them, and one person gives me sheds from his peacock, otherwise walk in the park to get duck feathers.  You are on your own for hooks, try "wally world".  I went to a fly-tying class and a fellow had raised pheasants and was giving away the salted capes so I took several lifetime's supply!  I use a lighted 4" magnifying glass, they are good for a lot more uses than fly-tying.

I generally use Cabela's and Jann's Netcraft for my flytying supplies because they seem to be the least expensive for most of the things that I use, and they have a decent selection, especially for the "novice".  Both will send you a paper catalog, but have online sales as well.

I have probably bought more stuff from Hook and Hackle than naybody else. Get on their email list, they have a near-constant 20% off on internet orders

I've bought quite a bit from Hook and Hackle also. I would definitely add their catalog to the list of those to pick up.

I'm somewhat suprised that no one has recommended the "side of the road" shop. If one keeps one's eye peeled, it's hard not to pick up some kind of materials!
