A perfect fit????

Is it possible to buy a barrel and have it fit perfectly on an existing receiver? I have recently purchased a 45-70 barrel and just put it onto my existing receiver and it seems to fit perfectly. I am of course going to put a feeler gauge on it tomorrow but was wondering if anyone had this blessed event happen to them? 

Also, no that I would do it, but what might happen if you have a greater than the suggested 0.02 gap in the fit?  I would never do it but I am the curious type.

I have been lucky enuff to fit three barrels without doing anything to them, so yea its possible. 8)

Sure it's possible, I've had a bunch that fit with no work, or very little work, but having many frames to work with increases your chances of a fit a LOT!!  ;) Even when they don't fit, many times all it takes is a few strokes with a file on the chamber face, then check latch engagement and you're good to go.  ;D

I bought a 45/70 BC barrel from Long Tom here on the forum and it locked right up on my old frame.  loaded up some of ammo using a load I developed years ago for the parent rifle, sighted it in (1.75 inch groups @100) and went hunting.  No need to spend any time working up a 45/70 load for that barrel... it's destined for bigger   ;) things!   ;D

Atlaw, I don't really believe the things your grandmother told me about you.  I really do think you're a good person.

I've had to tweak one out of about seven.  The rest locked up just fine.  I just now swung my Huntsman barrel over to a clean SB1 frame because the one it was on is fouled. and I don't have time today to tear it down.  It flits perfectly.  I think it is usual to fit, unusual not to fit.

Ah Ha!   So that was you!!  :o  Always wondered who it was she was hangin wiff...  :-\  She was right proud of me and always braggin on me... and I know some of the stories are hard to believe but they be all true!   8)

Yah, Granny was pretty cool... When I was a baby she always filled my bottle with my favorite beer...  :P
