Because they need it................otherwise you end up with a .257 and a 7x57 with short barrel life.

Sorry, but barrel length vs. life doesn't add up.   Most barrels burn out at the
throat not the muzzle.  If your logic were correct, then why aren't the 30-06
(the parent cartridge of all listed) and the 270 not 26" also???

All longer barrels take advantage of slower burning powders and will maximize
velocity.

As to why H&R chose only those two calibers, I don't know.

Current Handi's: 17 HMR, 270 Ultra Comp, 223 Bull Barrel.
Barrel wish List: 22 Hornet, 7-08, 30-30, 357 Mag, 45 Long Colt for starters.   Oh, and 35 Whelen too!

The original .35 Whelens (the good ones) had 26" barrels as well. I have one and it is great.  I sometimes wish they made a 26" barrel as an option in other calibers as well. And that from someone who usually likes shorter barrels. But I do enjoy my 32" Buff Classic and my 32" full choke 12 gauge barreled H&R as well....<><....:)

How does the length of the barrel affect barrel life??

The longer barrel makes these cal. perform at there best. A 25-06 with a 20in 0r 22 in barrel will blow your ears off.

Did you see that it was a joke? Back when Winchester came out with the .264, everyone said that anything less than 26" was a .270 with short barrel life.

The 25 and the 280 perform better (expansion ratio) with the longer barrel. The .270 would, too.

Mike, I couldn't get the "smilie" to work after the above statement............made it sound like I was trying to be a real jerk. I apologize if it looked that way.

Merry Christmas, Brother, and good shooting!

I prefer long barrels on every rifle just as a matter of looks and handling{can be very steady} however is there an official length where carbine stops and rifle begins? I seem to have seen as little as 4" difference years ago when looking at lever action catalogs.

And that's ironic. When I found my .280 limited edition(that MSP talked me into getting years ago) and glad of it!!!! ;) I didn't like the 26" barrel. After hunting with it for years, that 26" barrel was kinda annoying. I like the standard barrels. But I will credit MSP Retired about the selection of the .280 Remington!!! His suggestion was worth several hundred pounds of venison through the last several years, thanks MSP. You fed a family.....
