Ruger Blackhawk Question
« on: December 07, 2008, 08:48:43 AM »
I read a lot about the blackhawk chamber and throat problems in 45 Colt.  Does this also apply to the 44 mag, or is it a more standardized cartridge?  seems I don't hear about 44's being reamed, gauged, etc.

the 44's should be good to go right out of the box.

Are all the 45 LC blackhawks alike? Mine is ok!

Seems like the newer Blackhawks are ok. My 45LC is about a year old and is fine.

Nothing to really add to the thread, just had to tell fastbike I liked his avatar.  Got that exact bike myself and it's little sister right next to it in the garage.  Ahead of them, a Thunderbird. :) 8)

From what I've heard the 44's are slightly too large if anything. Certainly mine is a bit larger than I'd like - shoots .432's better and if I could find .433's I'd try them!

My new 5 1/2" ss .45 Bisley were .450 and one was .451.  I had them opened up this summer by cylindersmith (.4525).  This gun had a fired case date of March 2008.  I have an older .45 Blackhawk that has tight throats too but it shoots good so I've never fixed it.  It improved the Bisley groups with the same ammo before and after.  10 grs of Unique under a RCBS 270 SAA will touch each other now (2" before), as long as I don't mess it up.

BTW I have never had any problems with the 44 SBH models.

Better tight than over size as used to be so common on .45 Colt guns. At least it's a cheap fix to open them not so to make them smaller. Why they can't just get it right tho is a mystery.

My .45 NMBH chamber throats were all over the place in size and shape. Reaming plus recutting the forcing cones fixed them.

My .44 SBH is the best made Ruger Single Action I have. Throats were .431" and the forcing cone was very well done. After working the trigger, it shoots very well. No problems.

Had my throats opened to .452 at $10 a hole, they look kinda rough yet.  Looks to me like they should be finished smoother.  DP

Anything is possible........right from the box. Here is a link to a similar problem with a double action Ruger.
