45/70 BC barrel - SCORE
« on: November 29, 2008, 03:04:57 PM »
Me and the wife-mate went down to So. Jawja for Thanksgiving with my huntin partners.  I've was carrying my Handi with the new-to-me BC barrel mounted on it.  The one I want to rechamber to 45/120.  But remember, I got a rule, kill a deer with sumpin before you go messin wiff it!   ;D

After a fruitless Friday morning hunt, no suprise, I didn't expect much, that stand is no good later in the season, I got back in the woods at another location pretty late, and in the rain.   :(  About a half hour after getting settled, deer started coming out of a thicket on my right.  And they kept coming out and coming out and coming out!   :o  I stopped counting at 9, I'd been looking at each for antlers as they appeared, and had to turn my attention to the first 2 does who had by this time passed underneath my stand and were now standing 5 yards away from my tree, downwind, looking 20 feet up at me!  I decided to ignore them and picked out a fat doe at a comfortable shooting angle for the way I was sitting.

Now picture this... here I am, sitting 20 feet up in a Jawja pine, about 15 minutes before dark, there are I don't know how many deer in a 180 degree semicircle in front of me anywhere from 5 to 30 yards away, I've only used one of my 10 antlerless tags, the wimmins and my hunting buddies are back at the house wanting to go out to eat, the rain sounds like a cow peein on a flat rock, I got a single-shot rifle and only 4 rounds of loaded ammunition   ::)  AND I BEEN MADE!!!   :o

So I eased up my Handi thumbing back the hammer as that loooooong 32 inch barrel came up.  This was to much for does number 1 & 2 who weren't buying my Christmas Holly imitation.  They took off for less crowded climes while the rest of the does who noticed their departure just looked at them as if to say "where you going in such a hurry?  The rut's over and it's just us girls!"

The doe I'd selected was still looking at her departing friends when I touched off the 300 Speer HP which, at something between 1900 and 2000 fps, didn't take real long to travel the 20 odd yards between us.

Let me tell you bird hunters sumpin.  If you boys think a covey flush of quail is exciting, you ain't seen sh&%!   ;D  That bottom exploded with deer!   :o  They was goin ever which a way!  I lost track of the one I shot in the 4 or 5 others that ran in the same direction she did, but in the fading light I did see one flag fall sideways after about 30 yards.

So now that I'm 2 does into the 4 required for my winter's meat, I can, in good conscience, start the transformation of the BC barrel!

Great story buddy and congratulations. It sure sounds different than Maine deer hunting!!! You did good!!!....<><....:)

P.S. - now that you have that fine BC barrel I really have to get on the stick and send you a few of my favorite 45-70 loads you were good enough to say you would run throuh your chronograph for me. I think it's only been about a year now( ::) - Never trust somone working for the defense)....<><....:)

Yah, well remember I was going to buy some of those 350 gr bullets and the powder you use and duplicate your load but I didn't do that...  :-[  I read somewhere those bullets were pretty stoutly constructed and thought they might be a little er... overkill for our iti-biti deer.  But after once again confirming that those 300 gr. HP's are awfully "soft," maybe I'll try the 350's after all!   ;D  Give me a month or so!

That sounds like it was a fun hunt, Richard.  There's nothing like a .45-70.  People keep telling me it's a short range rifle and overkill for whitetails.  Mine was 220 yards, dropped him in his tracks and didn't ruin an ounce of meat.  What more can you ask for??

Them female deer are pretty randy lately here in Jawja ain't they?  I been mobbed several time this year with does!  Funny thing.  If you shoot one and sit still, the others will come back to investigate what happened to her!  4 in the freezer so far.  I had a 6pt. buck come within 6 feet of me while I was sitting in a ground blind the other day.  He looked me up and down, sniffed a couple times, then slowly walked off and began feeding.  This ain't the deer I remember from years ago when they would get your scent at 50 yd.s then give you the deer finger as they ran away.

Good job Richard!
