New to me scope on the DG rifle.
« on: November 26, 2008, 08:29:08 PM »
Just traded for a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x to throw on my CZ550 in .458 lott.  Got it all mounted up last night, and went to the runway this morning (aka shooting range)  Took me a bit to get it zeroed, then was getting some pretty consistant 2" 5 shot groups at 100 yards.  Those were plenty good enough for me for the first day... still trying to get used to a scope coming at my face with that much force...  got a little flinch to work on.

While I really like the scope and have several of them I don't think it would be my choice for such use as you have selected it for. It has about the shortest eye relief of most any Leupold scope. On such a heavy kicker I'd have selected one with a longer eye relief. The 2-7 has one of the longest eye reliefs and is in the same general power range. It also has a much wider FOV which on the 2.5-8 is yet another short coming for the uses I'd expect such a heavy kicker to be used for.

The VX-III 1.5-5 is a more normal selection for a dangerous game rifle having a really long eye relief and very wide FOV.

What lead you to select this scope for that duty?

Graybeard nailed it, myself I would not put anything over a  VX-III 1.5-5 on my DG rifle. That is the scope I used on my 416 Rigby and 375 H&H. JMHO.  ;)

I have on my Model 550 458 Lott a Burres Scope 1 3/4 X 5 X 30 and it does everthing I could expect from that scope.

Straight 2.5X Leupold with heavy duplex is my choice.  Maximum eye relief, light weight, no moving parts, takes a beating from heavy recoil without problem, never on the wrong power, can use with both eyes open and the heavy duplex makes it easy to line up quickly.

Not enough difference to make me care.  The 1.5-5x has 3.7-5.3" relief, and the 2.5-8 has 3.7-4.6"  So at the highest power, they are exactly the same eye relief, but with mine at highest power, I get 3x more magnification.  If I am shooting at something that I would only use 2x on, I might as well have the scope off and use open sights anyways.  When I'm shooting at 100 or more yards, 8x is about the lowest that I like to use.  4.6" is plenty for me if I really want to get the scope away from my face, and I still keep some magnification at that level.

We had a nice range in Haines but you couldn't beat the airport for long range pratice. When Layton bought his 50 cal it was nice being able to set up a thousand yard target.

I use a Nightforce 2.5-10X scope on my CZ 550 458 Lott.  I like it and make no apologies.

IMO, the 2.5 X 8 VX-III is perhaps the clearest, brightest scope in the VX-III line.  The only problem I have with it is mounting on a long action which in most cases requires a reverse mount, which, really isn't a problem at all.

got a little flinch to work on.

Heck, I'd flinch if I was pulling the trigger and it was up to YOUR shoulder. :o ;D  The Lott is a LOT of cartridge (pun intended)

Not to highjack this - I've been considering a NF for a DG rifle too. Considered the NF 1-4 and 2.5-10. I've looked over a 1-4 and it was great at 1X - seems to be a "true" 1X, making it good for shooting with both eyes open. But like Corbanzo I also prefer 6X or even 8X for over 100 yrds. Now if NF made a 1-6X that would be my ideal.

Grumulkin, what is the closest that your 2.5 will be "in focus" or good enough? Do you find the FOV ok for really close range stuff?

What reticle did you choose?

The illuminated reticle on the NF is also a nice feature in low light on dark bodied animals.

Thanks.
