760 Barrel Swap
« on: November 26, 2008, 12:36:48 PM »
I know this has come up before but i couldn't find it. I have a 1966 760 with the regular 22" rifle barrel on it. I would like to switch the barrel to a carbine barrel in the same caliber 30-06. My question is this: Is this a simple do it yourself proposition? Any special tools? Any other suggestions? I thought I remembered that it needed a gunsmith due to measuring headspace or something like that. I just can't remember. Thanks in advance for any responses.

why  not just chop  it

get a cronagragh  and  cut  inch  at   a time
have fun....stop cutting when  velocity starts  dropping to  much...then  re-crown
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs

45-70, that is probably what I will end up doing. At this point the cutting and crowning is an inconvenient option and smitty's are busy. If I could do the swap it could be easier and still give me the front sight without jigging, drilling, tapping etc. Thanks for the response.

You can't do the swap easily yourself.  The barrel is threaded to the extension and you'd need the right tools so as not to damage the extension when you unscrew the barrel.  Too, I don't know of any pre-made barrels with the right thread either.  Remington has told me they will not supply barrels-only, and they will only rebarrel to the original chambering of the rifle.  If all you want is a shorter barrel, cut it off.  You can do it yourself with care, Brownells sells recrowning tools.

Thank you, guys. You pretty much validated my assumptions. Appreciate the input. Has anyone used the crowning tools that you mentioned? The last thing I want to do is make a mess and still have to take it to the smitty. The gun has beau coup sentimental value but I still want to hunt with it and "need" the carbine feel. Thanks again.

don't  go  too  short

16  inches  minimum  by  law

leave  enough  so  if  you  some how  mess  up

a  smith still  has  barrel to work with

You need a punch that fits the holes in the extension the forearm rides on and clamp the receiver in a padded vice. Remove the trigger assembly .You will need to apply a little heat (just enough to break the loctite bond) to the extension where it meets the receiver. Screw the extension off of the bolt that holds it to the receiver. Once the barrel is removed the entire assemby (tube the forearm slides over, action bars, and bolt assemby) will come out of the receiver. Reverse the proceedure when installing the new barrel.
