First success for 7mm-08 Handi
« on: November 22, 2008, 07:25:19 AM »
This morning was opening day the Oklahoma firearm season. After a short stalk on 3 deer that walked behind a rise in the terrain into a draw I was able to make a 106 yard shot on a nice large SE Oklahoma doe. I have used this reciever with my 243 to take 5 or 6 deer but this was the first with the 7mm barrel. It shot as true in the field with my handloads as it did at the range a couple of months back. I took a picture with my cell phone that turned out farily good. Charlie

Way to go!

That 7mm-08 is one of the best!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Congrats Charlie, I'm also interested in the load you used and the performance of the bullet on the deer.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Goodness, yet another 7mm that didn't bounce off the deer!  The little 7mm-08 works good with out pushing you around to much.  Nice deer, go get some more meat.  DP

43.9 H414, 140 gr Sierra. As far as bullet performance. I was really suprised to walk up and not find an exit wound. The bullet hit a rib on the right side then took out the spine then sawed several ribs in half on the left side and came to rest under the skin on the right side. One of the strangest bullet paths I have seen (I usually study bullet performance on every deer I shoot). I was shooting slightly down but not to much. The 43.9 is a Very accurrate load in my 7mm. I know it is not near the top of the velocity chart, but I am not as concerned with velocity as I am accuracy. The 7mm has plenty of power even at low velocity for whitetail. Charlie

Hey  cbourbeau32, thanks for the load info and the field report.
I have seen the spine stop bullets on numerous occasions.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I used to shoot 180gr Failsafes from a 308Win BLR, the only bullet ever recovered was from a spine shot cow elk shot from 110 paces, bullet stopped against the hide after devastating the spine, she was the biggest cow I ever killed, quarters weighed 440lbs at the butcher.
