Wow - Just 5 Months!! New Barrels
« on: November 18, 2008, 01:45:53 PM »
Picked up my Handi Rifle (.30-06), that I sent to Gardner, Mass on June 18th, at my local FFL dealer this afternoon.  They had to send it to my dealer because Gardner had closed down and they weren't shipping to them any more (at least that's what they told me).

Anyway - what took so darn long? I don't have a clue.  I left them alone on it for about 8 -9 weeks, then started calling every couple weeks.  The last month I've been calling for an update every week.  Well, let me tell you about some "marvels" of workmanship.

But first, the good part.  They did NOT replace my hammer that I had shaped to clear the Bushnell Trophy 3x9 scope that I mounted on the '06 barrel.  And they did NOT screw with my 2.5lb trigger that took me two days of s-l-o-w fitting to get just right.  I figured that they were gonners - but they didn't touch them.  I hope someone there noticed what a good trigger feels like.  Anyway, it may just be the best part was what they didn't do...

I got 3 barrels fitted, a 223 Bull, .444 Marlin, and 50 Cal SS 24" Muzzleloader.

All three are only latching on the extreme right side of the locking lug.  The 444 barrel has a fine line edge of contact on the left half.

I thought all the 1-12" barrels, and the ejector barrels were gone.  This .223 Bull Barrel is both - a 1-12" ejector.  Unfortunetly, that barrel has the worst lock-up.  If you don't absolutely slam it shut like you're mad at it, you can open it back up just by pushing out at the barrel hinge point.  I'm about afraid to try shooting it.  I'm sure they fired it at Remington - I can't believe it didn't open up when they fired it.

My other Handi was like this with the original 22 hornet barrel.  It shot terrible with the original barrel, but fine with the 7.62x39 (when it fired), and the 357 mag barrel.  The 22H barrel only had contact on one side, just like these new barrels.

Well, the 30-06 barrel fits good - guess I'll at least get to use it for deer season next week before I send it all back.

OBXPilgrim,

Sorry to hear after all that time they still weren't able to get it done right. You also mentioned you got a 24" SS .50 caliber, did you check it for fouling in the bore? I had heard they were test firing them, then leaving them dirty until they were shipped back to the customer. You might want to check, if yo haven't already. Also, did you choose the 24" over the 26" barrel? Does your 24" barrel have a 5/8" or 7/8" breech plug? I thought they were only installing 26" barrels, currently?

Thanks for any information.

Actually, I did not choose the 24" barrel.  And I just realized that, now that you asked.  They sent me an invoice to approve at one time and had the 24" SS ML barrel on it.  I called to tell them that was wrong, along with the additional charges they hit me with that we on none of there documents or website (i.e., $15 for Proof testing), and the guy assured me they were only doing the 26" SS barrels and that's what I'd get.

The ML barrel was slightly dirty, no more than the .223 or .444 barrels - it wasn't BP fouling.  A dry patch made it bright & shiny.  The breech plug was the 5/8".

dpe.ahoy - PM was sent to ya.

I am glad that others have redirected me to this forum, as it is quite educational. I had shipped my frame in for new barrel fittings, and the UPS managed to lose the package. I have never had that happen before, but after reading this post, perhaps I should thank God for unanswered prayers. I have reported the gun as stolen and filed a claim to replace it. What is the odds that my current barrels can be fitted to the new frame without extensive or expensive work ??

I called today and they can't tell me where the rifle is, no ups tracking number, nothing other than it left Ilion on Nov 4. They were supposed to call back and let me know, but I left work at 3pm for an appointment.

If someone stole it, they're at least gonna have to put a stock on it.

I have five frames. Three are interchangeable. Two are not compatible with those three, nor with each other. If I were you, I'd take a barrel with me when I go shopping. Mount it on the prospective frame without forearm. Does it latch easily and tightly?

Hmmm... Called Wednesday, they don't know but they'll find out.

Called Thursday, I don't know but I'll give you the voicemail of the guy you talked to yesterday.

Called CS manager on Friday and had to leave voicemail, no call back.

What does it take? Cussing and screaming? Been polite so far.

4th day in a row to call. Still nobody knows where it is. Supposedly they sent it to Gardner, but Gardner is not accepting guns. So nobody know's if Gardner has it or what. They want me to send an FFL in so IF/WHEN they find it, they can ship it from Ilion. They say Gardner is closed, but they're waiting on email from Gardner.

Oddly enough I've never had anything but great service from Remington.  Just lucky I guess.

It could never be bad enough to make me buy a Savage.

I've got Remington and Savage. I had great dealings with Savage's customer service. The only better, was TC.

It's just too funny not to. I needed cheering up anyway.

It could never be bad enough to make me buy a Savage.

I finally got a nice clean Savage 24V series B at the Gun Show in .30-30/20 Gauge.

I really like my new Savage 24V Series B in .30-30/20.

There's a lot of good Savage info at Randy Wakeman's site.  The Savage is the best inline available IMO.

Well I gave Remington a break and didn't call any more since my last call on Nov. 24th. I placed another call today and was told that building security was now actively searching for my rifle. They have documentation showing they accepted it from UPS, but nothing else. I was told if they don't find it, they'll notify law enforcement and send me a replacement rifle. I was told if I don't hear anything else by Friday, to call back.

I guess this is my out, just ask them to send a check. I have the old barrel, stock and forearm. I could just mail them the rest of it and be done. Otherwise, I'd have to get them to "refit" my old barrel, stock and forearm, and I'm back to square one.

Financially, I'm sure it will work out. As far as being whole and trusting, not gonna happen. I was hoping this one was gonna be my daughter's first deer rifle. She's got a while to go before she makes up her mind about being a hunter, but it's kind of tainted for me now.

Remington called on Friday. They found my rifle. (only took 3 weeks to find it!) So now I gotta track down an FFL dealer who will handle it for me. My wife went into the hospital yesterday for a few days, looks like it will be next week before I get anything serious done with it.

See the Ilion poll. Most of the horror stories are those that sent their frames to Gardner during and just before Gardner closed in June, or those that sent them to Ilion just after the plant move, those that have sent them to Ilion in the last couple months have been real happy for the most part, except for some that experienced stocks and barrels that were out of stock which can happen anytime and always has from time to time.

If you're seriously considering the 45-120, you be well advised to make you mind up now and take advantage of Cabela's sale on Norma 45-120 brass at $63 per 50, that's real steal, I got what I considered a good buy 3 yrs ago at almost twice that!! :o

Sorry to hijack my thread back, just thought I'd post a link to some photos from my deer kill on Saturday.

Last Saturday I got a 4 point with the 30-06 barrel that was the original barrel that came on my "5 Month Wonder".  Just thought I'd try to get some use out of it before I have to send it back after hunting season.
The ML & 223 definetly need to go back, I'm still trying to decide to fix the 444 myself or send it back too.

So how long is the turn around now at this time of year?  I am thinking of sending mine out for 2 more barrels (45 LC & 12ga slug) and I was wondering what the current time frame was that others are experiencing..

Thanks,
