NEF trigger job
« on: November 17, 2008, 11:35:00 AM »
Hey all,

I had a trigger job done by NEF when I got my .308 barrel.  I love it, its about 3.25 pound pull.  But sometimes I get round that doesn't go off and I have to hit it twice to get it to shoot.  Any suggestions???

try making a more conscious effort to pull the trigger all the way thru, you may be letting off as soon as the trigger breaks instead of pulling it thru and the transfer bar may be dropping prematurely or partially out of the strike zone

You are not pulling the trigger far enough - more than likely. It has been suggested to use the crook of your trigger finger instead of the finger tip to help this problem. Not as much give. The transfer bar needs to go up all the way and stay there until the hammer makes contact with the firing pin.

Let us know if that takes care of the problem. Good Shooting and Good Luck

If that doesn't help, you may need a new hammer spring, it wouldn't be the first time it's happened even on a relatively new Handi.  :-\ Could be a gummed up firing pin too.

i'm betting it's just not pulling the trigger thru,it would be easy to make that mistake if you shoot a gun with a fresh trigger job( it's easier to release and you are not used to it yet)

Silly question but your using decent ammo right?

I had 4 of 20 dead rounds of cheap Wolf ammo
the other night, 80 for 80 of the other brands I
shot that day.

Yes, Handloads.  Federal and CCI primers.

CCI primers have been reported to cause problems too, just one more thing to work on!! ;D But if they worked before the trigger job tho, it's likely caused by not following thru with the trigger pull.  ;)

Yeah I was using CCI had issue with an old WIN 94 switched to Federal and went away.  Tried Federals on NEF today and had one not fire.

Hawk, Do you know what the standard trigger pull is on a factory Handi?
And if I may be so bold, inquire as to what you were charged for the trigger job and turn around time?
Thanks - gary

Gary,

H&R factory firearm triggers can vary from 3½lbs-7lbs, older frames typically had very heavy triggers, but in the last couple years they've improved a lot, those that I've bought new with one exception that were made 2006 and later have had very nice 3-4lb triggers. Gardner occasionally charged $20 for trigger jobs if the pull weight was already under 5lbs, but I can remember only a couple that reported being charged, but hundreds that got free trigger jobs to about 3½lbs, usually done with an accessory barrel order or a repair.  I think Lonewolf5378 had one done at Ilion, and I know Swampman had one done there, Swampman's was free along with a second hand barrel fitting, I think Lonewolf's was $15, but I don't remember for sure, that may have just been the return shipping charge.

They did trigger job for free when I ordered a new .308 barrel.  $80 barrel with free $20 trigger job.  Great deal in my book.  I still had to pay to ship gun to them and back but was worth it.  My trigger was 6.25 when I first got it.
