Need Advice on engraved pistol
« on: November 17, 2008, 03:47:57 AM »
Came across a couple old model vaqueros with DEEP engraving (full coverage) on Gun Broker.  The photos are good but not very fine so when I zoom in on the photo it distorts the details of the engraving to the point where I am not sure the engraving is very detailed (sharp clean lines) or a bit rough.  Does the deep engraving affect performance or ability to shoot full power loads? Other than that, what should I be cautious of?  I'm emailing the seller to ask the basics like ; does it fire? any problems? who engraved it?

After looking at various engraving sites the engraving on the pistol being offered is much deeper (a look I prefer) and the price seems commensurate with engraving services.  Can anyone with experience in engraving/collecting engraved pieces offer any advice?  I'd be willing to buy the pistol but can't afford to make a mistake.  Thank you very much for any insight.

It would require some pretty deep engraving and removal of quite a bit of material to reallty compromise the strength of the gun.  Remember it's the cylinder that's taking the brunt of the pressure not the cylinder frame.
Any SAAMI spec load would be more than fine but I'm just curious if you'd need more than that, essentially if one needs the super hot high pressure +P+ stuff, why not simply buy a model with a of a chambering that has that level of performance to begin with?
IOW, If ya need 454 performance buy a 454 not a 45 and hot rod it.

Oh forgot to add...there are no "old model" Vaqueros.  ALL are in factt New Models. There's the Vaquero and the New vaquero just as they're named by the manufacturer, two disticntly different models.
