model 7 caliber and barrel change?
« on: November 13, 2008, 11:44:19 AM »
I have a youth model 7 in 243 that my son has grew out of. I can replace the stock with no problem, but I would like to change it to a 260 or a 7mm 08. Is it possible to and how hard would it be. Talked to gunsmith and I would be looking at about $1000. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's way cheaper to sell and re-buy, or just swap plus a buck or two.

You could send it to ER Shaw and have it rebarreled and blued for about $350 or so.  You just need to change the barrel, the .243, .260, and 7/08 all use the same parent case.  No other alterations would be needed.  I'd call it easy to have done.  ;)

If your smith wants $1000 to do THAT, you had better damn well be getting a custom match grade stainless steel barrel like a Hart or a Krieger for it (meaning an expensive big name barrel brand).

The stock, well, depends on what kind you want.  You can get a Bell and Carlson Carbelite for it for about $160.  Wood is going to cost more.

Unless it sentimental, or you want a longer/heavier/special contour to the barrel that you can't find on a factory gun, it's almost always better economically to sell it and buy something else.

Remington won't do the swap?  Unless I was going up to a .308, I'd just stick with the .243.

Ebay or Gunbroker would be the best source for a stock.

Put the youth 700 in the safe for the grandkids.  Go by a new savage or a remington in what you want.   1000 sounds real high for a rebarrel job  more like 5 to 600

Find yourself a proud new father and sell the youth rifle to him, or do as I did, and save it for grandkids.  I hate to sell a gun or rifle.

Thanks for all the info fellas, but I solved the problem. I traded his 243 and some change for a brand new A-bolt in 7mm 08. He had never shot a deer with it, so no sentemental value, and I can finally say there are no more remingtons in my safe. Thanks.
