Compare Marlin 336 and Marlin 30

Anyone have a quick comparison of the models 336 and 30?
Which do you prefer and why?

I have looked at them side by side and don't see major differences.  It looks like the metal finish is glossy on the 336, and matte on the 30.  But I have seen glossy 30s and matte 336s.  The 30 is suposed to have a hardwood stock and the 336 walnut.  My 30 AW has a great chunk of walnut on it.

I don't worry about the difference any more.  I have seen 30s in gunshops sell for more than 336s and the other way as well, so I don't know.  I do know my 30AW is a great shooter after I did a trigger job on it and cleaned up all the burrs and stuff in the action.  It will be one of the last to leave my safe.

Thank you, Keith for the input.  I suspect there must be some difference, otherwise why the different model ? With all the users on the forum, I thought someone would know. I cannot find a reference in the Marlin site.

mechanically there is no difference in the two. stocks and sight options are about all that separates them.

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 30 such as the 30TK was made
for K-Mart and was the only difference besides maybe the wood as mentioned.

OK guys, I did more research and found that the 30 and 336A are basically the same, with the 30 made for box store sales. Both have dyed hardwood stocks and a different forend clamp from the pricier 336C or other fancier 336 models. The 30 was an earlier designation and I guess was later changed to 336A to simplify inventories. The metal parts are all alike.

There has been a good numbers of members on MarlinOwners that have said nothing
but great things about the 30's and their accuracy!! Personally, I've never owned or shot one...I've always had 336's.

i personally have both. a "centennial" 336 in 30-30 with smooth walnut, and a glenfield 30A in the same caliber with birch stocks. the 336 will do a inch or less with factory fodder or handloads, the 30A shoots even tighter.

I've owned several 336's and currently own a Marlin 30TK in 30-30.  The TK differs from the standard 336 carbine in having a 18 1/2 inch barrel, a shorter forend, a 2/3 magazine , hardwood stock,  simpler sights, and weighs about 6 to 8 onces less.  My 30TK is very compact and a great carry rifle.  These, I believe, were made in 1989-1990 for KMART.  Hope this helps.
