barrel fit

hey everybody. I have a NK serial marked 45/70 handi rifle.  I purchased a 308 barrel from a fellow I met on this site. the exchange went very well.  But much to my dismay when I put the barrel on my reciever there is a significant Amount of slop with the fit.  Would the factory fit this barrel to my reciever?  Could

Could I Shim the barrel and hinge pin? Or am I fornicated? any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I think I"m becoming a handiaholic.

The factory won't fit it... Read the Faq's there is alot of information on barrel fitting there...

STUMPJMPR is right - no factory fitting after the fact. The factory frowns on fitting your own too. There are several people who have done it anyway and there are barrel fitting instructions in the FAQ.

H&R in Ilion will fit second hand barrels IF they can, but a barrel that fits loose after closing the action isn't a candidate, the underlug must be long enough for them to cut it to fit, they don't shim, but it can be done yourself as shown in the FAQs.  ;)

Be aware that they still wouldn't fit a .308 or any other high pressure barrel to an NK frame or any frame made before 1999 tho, that would include all of the * marked barrels on the accessory barrel list.

Shimming done properly, is NOT and should never be looked at as a detrament. Actually the way I see it, it is the exact opposite. Its a opertunity to fit the barrel to your own precise tollerances. Likely better than factory fit.

 Read the Faq's and use good shim stock and you and your newly fit barrel will ahve many many tight groups.

Thanks guys for the great advice.  I inspected the barrel/receiver fit and found that most of the play was lateral, and a very slight play up and down on the barrel.  I checked the gap between the breech of the barrel and the receiver with a set of feeler gages.  The gap would clamp down on a two thousandths gage when locked up.  So I read the great FAQ and tried the beer can shim.  I cut a strip the width of the hinge pin inside the receiver and put the rifle together.  It locks up as tight and smooth as my factory 45/70 barrel.  The rifle also opens up with a press of the lever very smoothly as well.  I think this is just my stupid luck.    So I guess my next question is.... is it safe to shoot this barrel on my receiver?  is there any chance of damaging the receiver?    and is it ok to just use new beer can shims every time I break down the rifle for a cleaning?  I've already stored a few extra behind the recoil pad.  Thanks again guys

 Many guys have done this with great success. You will be fine. How is the lock up? I mean in the latch.

Personally, I prefer the use of steel shims to the aluminium. I am lucky enough to have a number of machinist friends that keep my in all thickness if steel shim stock.  I have three handis with steel shims, some have shot many hundreds of rounds so equipted.

The rifle locks up very nice and tight, a muted "click" and its rock solid.  I did consider the recoil of the barrel against the pin and receiver eventually crushing the aluminium shim to too large of tolerance.  So I'll likely measure the thickness of Miller High Life can and replace with a blade scavanged from my feeler gague set.   MY Real question is Now:  Is it safe and prudent to fire this 308 barrel from my 1996 receiver?  Has anyone done anything similar? Or should I just trade this thing off and secure my boyish good looks?  I also do not want to risk damaging my much beloved 45/70 frame.  Thanks again guys.

You're not going to have any catastrophic failure, but if you have sticking brass(ejector), hard to break the barrel open(extractor) or the barrel release is hard to press, it's a sign that the frame isn't handling the pressure well. ;)

This is my first time on these forums, I was redirected from the intermedia forums by one of the guys there and this is a godsend. I sent a NEF Handi frame back to the factory for a new barrel fit and UPS, whom I am generally well pleased with, LOST my package. I have never had this happen before and they will file a claim on Friday for the value stated on the lost frame, no problem. However, that leaves me with 2 barrels setting in my closet which the factory will not touch. I thought I was simply...well... anyway, this sounds like the situation is far from hopeless. I will now purchase a new rifle with the sb2 new frame and see how the barrels fit, or at least there may be an outlet for the barrels if I do not achieve a fit with the info contained herein.  ;D

I would file a claim for the entire cost of the new rifle and the barrels that were fitted to it, make em pay for the entire loss!!
