Factory 280 Ammo
« on: November 01, 2008, 03:50:11 PM »
What factory ammo do you shoot out of your 280's. I am picking one up next week and at this point probly won't reload for it. Kurt

I bought a bunch of green box Remington 140 grain SP's from our only Wal Mart (40 miles away!!) that was getting out of guns and ammo as well. It shoots GREAT in my .280 Handis. By the way I bought it for $5 a box, and I bought all they had....<><....:)

Ditto on the Remington 140 gr Corelokts....they shoot better than any other factory load that I have tried. You might want to consider reloading though, as ammo prices are throught the roof, and you can get much better groups with reloads if you experiment a litte.......I was able to shrink my groups down to less than an inch @ 100 yds.... By a good scope! Optics are a key factor in accurate shooting, as are a good trigger and good shooting form.....I think you will ike the .280.........mine hasn't had a deer get away yet......mostly neck shots though....lol                   Mike Bare

The gun I'm getting is mostly just for the collection it is a Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation special Edition and just could not pass it up for the $$$$. Don't really have a lot of use for it and probly won't shoot it enough to justify loading for it . But still want to be able to have it sighted in and ready to go if needed. Thanks for the info so far. Kurt

I am using HORNADY LIGHT MAG 139gr.

That's my vote also.
They are cheaper than any of the Remington or Winchester premium ammo.  They are right on the back door of 7mm mag speed and energy at over 3100fps.

My RMEF 280 is sighted in at 200 yds with 139 gr moly coated lightmags which ends up about an inch and a half high at 100 yards, and 6" low at 300yds. I can hit clay pigeon sized targets at 1000feet with every shot.

Mine didn't care for the Remingtons when I first got it, but did seem to like the Win. Ballistic SilverTips in 140g.  Still got a couple boxes of that I bought 3 years ago at $11.00 a box after hunting season ended and the store was over-stocked.  They are over 3 times that price now. :o   Bet the price of ammo and componets doesn't come down much even with the drop in metal prices.  DP

Bumped for a range report.

Shown here is a picture of 5 shots at 200 yards with 139gr Hornady Light Mag .280 from my 26" RMEF handi.
I was in a valley shooting directly into a 10mph wind.
The gun is zeroed at 100 yards.  The grid lines are 1" on the target.
I hope that I can post an even better one soon.  This is a windy time of the year, I may have to wait until the end of winter.
