just wondering if there are any well known gunmakers that build bolts around any of the savage actions?

If you're gonna put money into a rifle, you should start with something like a Remington or a Winchester IMO.

ER Shaw is now offering rifles built on a Savage action with 110 chamberings to pick from, custom barrel lengths/contours, etc. Actions start at $625 and go up from there.

For my money Savage is the only action to build a custom gun on. I took a almost new 06 up to Fred at Sharp Shooters Supply and had him true the action, put one of his triggers in it and put one of his .22-6mm barrels on it. I then brought it home and bedded it into a new stock. I have shot 1 in. groups with it at 600 yrds. When I burn this barrel out I`ll fit the next one myself. The most accurate gun I`ve ever owned was on a Rem. 40 X action, but it was a .222 mag. and was out of gas by 600 yrds. and this one is just comming into it`s own.

The savage is a good action to build on. I had a .243 rebarreled to 6.5x55. I had a timney trigger put in. I have it topped with a 1.5-4.5 Leupold.

We had to chage the box mag to a long mag to accomodate the longer cartridge.

The barrel nut has a lot to do with the rebarreling and accuracy.

I read that a barrel nut can be put on any rifle like the savage. When that is done it improves accuracy. The reason it is not done, people don't like the looks of a barrel nut in front of the receiver. I say so what. All my savages have the barrel nut, and I don't see any distraction from the looks.

I just had Montour County Rifles http://mcrifles.com/ build a 6mm BR with a Broughton barrel and a Savage Target Action. He said this action was out of square a bit, mainly Barrel threads from heat treating, But nowhere near as bad as last two remmy actions he's trued up!
He deals with Joel Russo for custom stocks to ='s nice stuff!

You're not limited to one caliber with a Savage action, you can sell off barrel if you don't care for caliber and try something else, Barrels are easy to sell because you dont need to be a "Gunsmith" to headspace a new or used barrel like on Winny and remmys/rugers.

Don't let "The Remmy fans" steer you away from a Savage Action, there certian ones on this forum that have one track mind and never have nothing good/nice to say, Savage actions are just as good as anyone else if not better.

I knew that there was stuff and folks out there that deal with the Savage as a friend has a light gun he used for 600 BR and Hi Power competition which he had a 3 groove Lija barrel and a kevlar reinforced stock from Wolfe?

I've got customs on Rem (varies actions they make),Win,Sako and Ruger never have don't anything on a Savage action. Savage lately have been coming out with some interesting models like that dual port rifle and if your handy you can do alot with one of their rifles as to changing caliber etc so you can elimated cost that a gunsmith would charge.

As to comments like the Savage was out of square but not as bad as the last two Rem. Who cares did the gunsmith charge less might have said the same thing to the owners of the Rem action about the savage action.

I don't consider the action as the make or break on building a custom rifle as to accuracy if that was true we only have one action to build rifles on and the reason I use more rem actions is more option as to after market parts and you can pin the lug and set it up as a switch barrel rifle.

If I was building on a Savage action I'd want to elimate that barrel nut. Years ago I got one of those Savage 220 swift in a single shot (one action fit's all) was a pretty good shooter looked into having it rebarrel at the time friend of mine liked that rifle alittle more than I did and he still has that rifle.

I'm not putting down Remy's either was Smith,He has a ton of Remmy stuff, I had a remmy 722 with a Hart .243 barrel on it a it was slick as all get out and shot fantastic but I don't like the Remmy or die mentality, I had the barrel nut removed from my Savage but just so I could go with bigger contour,and it does look better. And no smith didn't charge less for "less square" Same burning at the time to pay end.

I'm different than most as I'll build something on what I have and I don't own anything that I would't rebuild on or have rebarrel. Afew years ago here in Co at the 1000yd match out of Denver one shooter did pretty good with a Savage speaks well of the shooter and gunsmith who build that rifle IMHO. I don't care what action something on as long as it shoots one of my varmit rifles is a tricked out Ruger #1 in tight neck 6ppc got another varmit rifle in tight neck 6ppc on a mimi mauser action have another one on a Rem 40x action PD cann't tell the difference. Right now I'm have a 257Wby build on a Ruger action (tang safety) and a 270 on a Rem action, in 2000 Browning build a limited run of 300RUM I wish that rifle didn't shoot as good as it does so I could rebarrel it and I got a Tiika T3 in 300WSM great shooter.

It just seems like you wouldn't want to sink money in a "budget rifle" action. Why not start with a Remington, Mauser, or Winchester action. That way if you ever need to sell it, you get more for it.

Used to own a custom Atkinson and Marquart in 338 Mag built on an old Savage action. It was fine,but like some others, I let it slip thru my fingers. Like my Sukalle built 257 on a BSW Mauser action Cripes!

Some of the custom Savage rifles I've seen are works of art. Have seen some of the new budget-priced M700's and think they are just ugly. The Savage American Classics look pretty good in my eyes.

You really don't want to throw stones at the Savage actions. In some ways the Savage actions are better than the M700's. Starting with the method in which the bolt handle is attached, the replaceable bolt head, and the barrel attachment system which improves accuracy and allows owners to change barrels easily.

Of course the Remington also has its advantages. If you want to break the bolt handle off its much easier to do - happens sometimes before the owner takes the first shot... But hey, as long as they look nice, who cares if they become an expensive club, right?
