Saving Magazines

Like a lot of folks, I save my old Riflemen and Handloader Magazines (and others).  I have moved them several times and each time they get heavier and heavier as I get older and older.

I pulled a few out as I was unpacking them and realized the last time I looked at then was the last time I unpacked them.

I asked myself why am I saving them?  For reference material? How am I going to look anything up?  What was I referencing?

I started looking at the content.  Rifleman, Rifle and Handloader use to be a good source for do it yourself ideas.  All to often now the articles seem to be nothing more than rewrite of Advertisers press releases.

Or the how to do article is written about how to use of all the products in an advertisers inventory.    Is that really worthy of keeping?

Okay, Okay so you guy as saying that's not really his brain speaking, it's his sore back or aching legs...so can anyone give me an alternative solution of what to do with these magazines?

Use nylon cord to tie them into bundles about 12" thick. Soak them over night in water and use them as a media for testing bullets. That's what I'm doing with mine these days. Works real good.

I'm in this same situation. I usually only keep ones that I think I may want to reference again in the future sometime. And often times I do look back at them.
However, I have started to weed out some of them. What I started doing was giving them away to younger hunters, friends or others. That way someone else gets to share in the joy and I am helping the next generation keep their interest in the outdoors. So maybe you know someone else who may benefit from them? :-)

The American Rifleman got dumped in the recyclers box.

The Precision shooter, SPG black powder cartridge, Handloader, Rifle  and Varmint hunter all got put up for sale here on Greybeards.

As a a resylt I made a realy good guntrade and replenished my gun fund...the magazines are now in the hands of others to enjoy.

Thanks Graybeard for making this board available, each time I shoot the Martini I got from John, I will think of you both!

back issues of mags
« Reply #6 on: January 05, 2004, 04:14:57 AM »
I was told that I would be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life about 25 years ago.  I no longer use a chair, or walkers, or canes, or any type of harnes.  I still have extreem dificulty lifting anything over 35 or 40 pounds and can't walk more than a mile and am never pain free, but I love the outdors, my contender and trying to hunt.

What I wish someone, even comercialy, would do is to record all thoes wonderful back issues on a searchable disk, either CD or DVD.  Imagine having ten years of back issues that only weigh ounces instead of pounds and not be missing one single article!

For thoes of us that have come late or are new to this wonderful sport of hunting, shooting and wildcatting, this would be great.  I always hear of an artical in some old mag that I never seem to be able to find.  Us late comers would realy like some of that "old" knowladge that all you long timers no longer find usefull.  Part of the fun of this trip is wondering what if and making your a choise from all the info you find and advise you get from you guys.

my bro and i keep all of our mags for refrences. they have come in handy several times when we are doing reports or research in college cause most of the time ya need at least 3 sources for the paper and those mags are real nice.
one thing we do is keep em in order by yr and month. on top of the bundle we keep a note card giving an outline of each mag. saves time when we are going threw em.   some yrs ago, my bro purchased bout 100 FFG's (old ones from the early 50's to the mid 80's) we are planning on buying those binders that keep a yrs worth of mags and keeps em in nice shape too.

My big question on the handloaeder CD is it searchable or is it just a ton of PFD. files??  I have 1/2 of a full set of handloader and the old ones are 500% more enjoyable and informative than current stuff.  I keep only Rifle and Handloader now, I went through old guns and ammo and others and ripped out the few things work keeping, exploded diagrams etc.  jb

If you have Handloader Magazines older than two years, I would be interested in
working out a purchase agreement.

Backwoodsman, Turkey Call, The Elk Fountaion mag, Primitive Bowhunter, all the misc. mags I might pick up all go to my Archery Ranage front dest when I'm done.  I figure someone else might want to give em a read.  If there is some article that I think is worth saveing I cut it out put it in a file.  I've been keeping my Wildrness Way and Traditional Bowhunter Mags a while, Kept a Guns and Ammo .22 Firearms special edition.  Have a few other one copy keepers. Have kept my Compton Traditional Bowhunter mags too.  I figure I will eventually pass on most of these too.

In my house were usually drowing in paper so I do try to get rid of or pass on what I don't want to keep right away.
