.30-06 Ejector Problems
« on: October 28, 2008, 06:16:44 AM »
I inherited 3 boxes of Wolf Gold 180 gr. .30-06 and almost every one failed to eject.  After cleaning and cleaning again, the same problem continued.  I was begining to think it needed a Huntsman rod.  I fired Federal 180 gr. ammo.......no problem.  The Wolf cases too thin?  Any clues out there?

I have two guns that no matter what I do always seem to leave stuck vases. Not all the time, just enough to be annoying... They are the 30-06 and the 25-06 calibers.  All the suggested things tried. they helped some cause as I say they only occasionally happen.

Funny thing is, is my 243 and 308 have NEVER DONE IT!!!

I have a theory, but its not proved. These issues have lead me to say Rimmed calibers are best in the Handy rifle. Not that they cannot also stick, they just dont!!  ::)

Sorry I cannot help more. Just wanted you to know your not alone...  You may well be on to something, suggesting something is up with this case or load. I haven't shot it or herd much about it to comment further.

I have two 30-06 H&Rs with ejectors, never had a stuck round in either with factory(Rem and Federal) or handloads. Too warm a load will cause cases to stick as will cases that are dirty, oily or have any kind of varnish or coating on them. Same goes for the chamber, but if it's clean and polished, best advice is to add a BB ahead of the ejector spring and polish the ejector and housing. If that doesn't work add a manual ejector notch ala Fred M, or convert it to an extactor if you want 100% reliability with all ammo. Was the Wolf ammo accurate Pete?

Tim, I'm not the greatest shot, but the Federal seems to give me better groups.  I had one Wolf round fail to fire, reloaded it and it fired.  Glad I wasn't looking at a 10 point!

All my other Handis are extractor, and none have ever failed.  I'm going to send a .357 barrel down state to a buddy for a .357 Maxi job soon, and I'm also going to send the '06 to be converted to extractor.  End of problem.  A spent case stuck in a rifle converts it to a club.

I really like extractors, I converted the 30-30AI to a modified extractor since I didn't have an extractor claw for it and didn't want to order one from CS just yet, it extracts unless the case sticks, then it ejects just before the barrel breaks open to the full extent. That can be surprising when you're not expecting it!! It's as bad as switching back and forth tween extractors and ejectors while at the range with several rifles, I forget which is which until it surprises me!! :o

My 30-06 gave me the same problems at one time
I removed the ejector spring and polish the ejector and housing and  oiled .I straighten the ejector spring that was installed from the factory on a angle
never had the problem again
I wish my 7mm-08 had the ejector set=up

Sorry, I'll stick with extractors and not have to field my cases.  I know exactly where they'll be....not under 3 feet of snow, or 3 inches of manure, or stuck in the barrel.
