Very nice looking set up.  All together and ready to roll.  I bet your case weighs a fair amount with the ammo  ;)

As soon as I saw how short they were and the fact that he called it his truck gun I knew he had to own a Dodge.

If he had a Chevy he wouldn't have had to cut them at all!!  ;D :P

No just kidding cannon. That is a nice set up and ready for anything.

longtom, the only one I had to cut was the 30-30 barrel. All of the rest are  standard NEF, some are "youth" versions, however.      Doug.

This is my travel rifle, 17 FB, but could just as easy be a 30-06.  Packed in two layers in a standard brief case, airport legal (does surprise some people in the check in line).  Larry

Great idea. I've been thinking of doing a similar set-up in a soft case.

Canon, thats a sweet setup... Were it mine I would scrap the 20 bbl for a .223, but sweet sweet setup nonetheless!

I love the idea but have had issues with keeping blued guns in hard cases with the gray padding. It ruined the blueing on one of my rifles. I'm not sure if it was a combo of the oil on the rifle and what chemical is in the padding? -g

Larry -- I really like the way you made a barrel band for the forend lug on your 17FB. That's just plain Parkerizing on the metal, isn't it? Did you use the sort of chemicals that Midway sells, or do you have a professional setup? I wonder if I can do that without goofing it up too bad.

So far my "truck gun" is a plain Pardner 12-gauge that is cased under the plywood floor of my stripped-out Escort wagon, sort of a poor-man's economy hook-and-bulletmobile. However, I have a light rifle project in mind, since there's a spare Handi frame on the shelf, with a plastic MC stock fitted, but no barrel. If I could find one of those light .243 barrels, maybe handloading would make it shoot resonably well. A .308 is another thought, since I already handload for that cartridge. I do want to keep it as light as possible, with minimum recoil. I suppose .30-30 is another one to think about, maybe bobbed to 20". But I would like to give the gun some kind of finish more durable than bluing.

I used the Midway chemicals, I looked to see if I could find the setup in the FAQ's, but I could not.  I've done it a couple of ways, best I have found is a piece of 3 inch (I think) black PVC tubing with a cap on the bottom with a 110 Volt water heater element in it.  I just stand it up in a bucket and plug it in.  I do have a thermostat in it, but I have found a few 175 degree little ones that would work even better, I just fill it up, takes less than a gallon of solution and plug it in, hang the barrel in it and in 10 minutes it is done, I have done atleast a Dozen and have only used half of the gallon I bougth from Midway.  Anyone wants to build one I will take some more pictures and send them a thermostat, I have about a half dozen of them.  Larry

Use Control F to search the page for parkerizing, it's been in the More Handi Info section since you wrote it.  ;)

Hold the Ctrl key down and hit the f key, a find window will pop up, you can also click edit and select find on this page, type the search word and hit next, each time you hit next, it will highlight the searched for word on the page.

I see a couple have the scopes off. What kind of scope rings are you using? And do they return to zero?

I have 2 of these.  The one in the picture is using some standard Weaver rings, the clamping side uses a cast type part to clamp with, it's return to zero is OK, if you tighten it down the same way and push the scope forward into the locking notches in the base.  The best one I have is a .22 Mag with a scout mount scope, it can stay mounted to the barrel while in the case, so there is no return to zero issue at all.  Larry
