I think a little down again where we actually hunt.
However, in and around the city itself of Eau Claire there are alot. More in town and golf courses than anywere

Talking last night with a couple of guys who hunt farms here near Eau Claire and for most, it seems, numbers are down.

still seeing some nice deer on their trail cams, but all at night and really not huge numbers.

I heard the last DNR estimate was 1.7 million  :o
I hope I've got enough freezer space  ::)

My son-in-law and his group (nine altogether) recently hunted for a week (brought their man shacks with them) by the Windsor Dam area (North of Argonne, South of Highway 70) in the NE side of the state. They got 13 does altogether.

on Ag land, the numbers seem to be about the same. On the large tracts of public land with no Ag land nearby, numbers seem to be down and racks are considerably smaller than last year. The hard winter and lack of acorns in this area took it's toll. While hunting with the youngest on public land during the youth hunt, altho  we saw plenty of does, none of them had any fawns with them.....nor did we see many fawn tracks. The buck my son shot, even tho it aged at 2 1/2 years had only a six point rack.

After talking to the son-in-law again, I have to correct my previous post. They were a party of 6, not 9, and of the 13 deer taken, 1 was a spike horn, and 1 was a fork horn, the other 11 were all does. In other words, lot of good eating, but nothing close to a trophy.

Skunk......was this during bow season?  or last year? Just wonderin...cause you said it was a recent hunt.  I didn't think there was a gun buck season anywhere yet other than CWD zones. Iffin it was bow season thats a good job for 6 hunters in one week.

Yes, it was just recently during this bow season - about 2-3 weeks ago. They camped out for the entire week. I've recently become a beneficiary of a plump rear quarter and a nice juicy tenderloin, and that makes me very happy. :)

On the same note, another son who is bow hunting a little southeast of the Windsor Dam area, has a really nice Buck coming in by his tree stand. From the trail cam pictures, he can't get an exact count on the number of points (thinks it's a 10 point), but I guess it has a huge body. Of course, they all look huge until you actually get it on the ground. ;)

Just got back from Phillips and actually saw four, you heard right, four deer on the cam. Two were bucks both eight pointers too at 2 am. I would think I would see more but it was a hard winter.

yep...I know.






But the legal limit was one deer per hunter, buck or doe. So a party of 6 that took 13 deer would be in violation. That's why I figured it wasn't the youth hunt.

own property in Clark county the population is slightly up around my land.  Been seeing deer quite a few deer lately.  Quite a few really nice bucks 8 and 10 pointers. A few 6 pointers one with a large spread.  The doe population is really good and lots of fawns.

Pretty slow for the most part in our part of Eau Claire County.  Some nice bucks taken off of a few local farms, but pretty slow otherwise.
I saw 2 deer total on Saturday, my daughter caught a glimpse of a nice buck though.
I shot 2 nice does Sunday morning, saw 10 total deer Sunday, but all does and fawns.  The 2 does I shot each had 1 fawn with them.
My dad saw a fawn or 2 and one little buck--he hunts on the other side of the same woods as my daughter and I. 
Very, very few shots fired opening weekend, and next to none near us.

Very slow in Barron/Washburn county. No deer yet, but so many close calls it is driving me nuts. Persistence and patience. :(

Seen only 5 deer opening day and 2 on Sunday in Juneau County. Fortunately the last one on Saturday was a buck and since the youngest filled his buck tag in the youth hunt, I let him fill mine with this 8 pointer. Tomorrow we hunt for doe in Monroe County. We too heard less than normal shots fired the first two days......

thanks Skunk....he was pretty excited. To me, it woulda just been another deer, to him, it's the biggest buck of his short hunting career, and it made for some great memories.

Saw two yesterday in Price county muzzleloader seasen. The timber wolves were howling like crazy the night before. They seem to move a lot less when the wolves are close by.

I hunt unit 11 and the numbers were way down up there.  Seems to be a lot of losers shooting them by spotlight at night up there.  I still had decent numbers and some quality bucks on camera, but they were all nocturnal.

Lots of losers by me too. I found a pile of apples 40 yds from the end of my road on the power line last week and three gut piles very close by. LOSERS!

Pretty poor season in central Wisconsin, Wood County.  Most have been shot off the previous couple of years, hope some breeding stock remains.  We hunt hard with a large group and I never shouldered my weapon.

Lets see, 11 does taken = 33 deer you won't see next year!

Was in unit 20 for three days last week. There seems to be less deer than last year at this time. Has anyone found a lot of winter kills this spring so far? Deer droppings sre so scarce we walked a half mile in the county land before finding any sign of deer. Any similar reports?
