.308 problems
« on: October 26, 2008, 06:01:49 PM »
Hey gyes been a long time sense I posted anything.  I got a .308 bull barrel for my NEF .204.  Shooting werd hits dead on then about 2 to 3 inches high then right back down on bulls eye, then right back up to 2 to 3 inches.  Any suggestions??  Left and right are fine.

Thanks

Could be a bad scope, loose mounting, inconsistent or bad lock up, read the Handi basics sticky and check the scope base and rings.  ;)

Just went through same problem with 12ga/scope sighting in problem: found the recoil had moved the scope (tight but not tight enough) and the hammer was hitting the scope but it would only do it like every other shot or so. am going to shim the scope and tighten better with RED loc-tite.

Edit, Sorry went with blue Loc-Tite, and a double back tape inside the rings themselves. Should'nt have any more problems. thanks Tim.

Red loctite will require heat for removal, blue or purple should work as well if it's just in the rings. I'd Just try some self-stick label material in the bottom ring halves after lapping the rings, the combination of more surface contact and the "friction" paper should do the trick. The paper is easier to remove than Loctite too.  ;) Burris includes friction paper with their rings, it's nothing more than self-stick label material. A third ring is another option.

If impact shift is vertical only and NOT horizontal I do not believe the problem is related to loose rings or scope or a bad scope. Those usually manifest in more random shifts.

I suspect the shifting is more related to the quirks of the handi rifles and on that I'm sure not that knowledgeable as many in this group are. There likely is something buried in the sticky that can explain it but I really doubt its related to a bad scope or loose base/rings or shifting scope for that matter. Look to the gun and its quirks or how you are shooting it for the answer.

What type of forend do you have? with my .308 survivor , if I rest the rifle on the large retaining bolt, I get dead center bulls eye. If I rest it on the forend (muzzle side of the bolt) it or I shoot 1.5'' low @50 yrds . Now that my trigger is lighter 3# (was over 6#) I need to try this again to see if I get the same results.

Just wanted to say thanks.  I figured it out.  The scope mount that came on barrel from factory worked loose.  I removed and then apply lock tight.  Will try shooting again tomarrow.  Thanks for advice again.
