.375H&H Scope
« on: October 22, 2008, 05:10:50 AM »
I am hoping to buy a new rifle in 375H&H very soon and was planning on buying a new Leupold 1.75x6x32 the rifle will be a CZ or a Win M70 However i recently removed a Leupopld 1.5x5x20 from my BLR and am now thinking on using this scope on the 375, and wanted some opinions on my decision . Thanks Tanoose

That's a good scope for a dangerous game rifle.

The Leupold 1.5x5x20 is probably the standard by which other scopes for the .375 are judged. It's never a bad choice for what the cartridge is most often used. I actually do like the Leupold 1.75x6x32 better but it might not fit that long action rifle without some weird combination of extension rings or bases. I kinda don't like the idea of such base/rings on a heavy kicker just on general principle.

The Leupold 2-7 is another excellent choice that in a way I prefer to the 1.5-5 as I just don't like 20mm objective lens they just don't pick up the light and transmit it thru in really low light situations as well as scopes with larger bells do. The 2-7 like the 1.5-5 has a super long eye relief so nice on heavy kickers. It still has a really wide FOV which I consider essential on a rifle that might be used up close and personal with dangerous game. It even has a bit more magnification if you want to really reach out and touch an antelope say.

I love the Bushnell Elite 4200 1.75-6 also and really like it better than all the above but it doesn't have the long eye relief most want on a heavy kicker.

I have a Luepold fixed 4 power on my Sako 375H&H.
If I were to replace it due to a change in hunting or a problem with the scope I would look at the 1.25-4X28 trijicon scope.  it has a lit reticle in it and may show up better on somethig black headed to you than cross hairs, even thick ones may be lost and a poor shot could be placed.  The only thing that is keeping me from adding one now is I really do not want to set up at the bench and shoot that cannon.  Off hand is not bad with the 375 but when you lean into it....  Well let's say it takes a while to zero in the rifle for me.  I do the three shot sight in methode.  Shoot one round at a target.  Put the cross hairs on the hole and shoot again.  Make your adjustments from the new hole to the old hole.  Now shoot a third round at the first hole.  You should be with in an inch and your done.

tanoose, the Leupold 1.5x5x20 is what I have on my Sako 375 H&H, and in my opinion it is probally the best scope for that set up.

Just for variety...I use a vari-X II  2x7.  My 375 is a rem BDL Stainless.  I use it in place of a 338 because it weighs just under 8lbs and not necessarrily as a DGR.

I had a Leupold M8 4x on a 375 H&H Encore barrel for a while. This was just a fun gun, no DG hunting or anything planned for it. I liked that set up quite a bit. It gave enough magnification for shots to 200yds without a problem and it kept the gun under 8#.

I currently have a VX-3 2.5-8x in Warne QR rings on a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan in 375 Ruger. This is an ideal setup for me. This is an elk rifle, so I'm not worried about having a super low end magnification. For my gun, with my load, set on 8x, the duplex reticle lets me zero at 200 yards and the top of the heavy duplex post is a perfect 300yd zero. That's about the farthest shot I'd ever get in the area I hunt.

But, just as I typed that it occurred to me that this won't work on you 375 without some sort of offset ring setup. The 2.5-8x is not long enough. Either way, it's a great scope.

I use a straight 2.5X scope on my M70 three six bits.  It is a new Weaver in Weaver tip off rings.  I had my doubts about it holding up but it's been good for 10 years now.  For a DG scope I don't have to worry about it being on a higher power and 2.5X. It is still plenty of magnification for any longer range shots and sufficiently low powered that I can shoot very quickly with both eyes open.

+1 for the Leupold 2 1/2x8.  If mounted on the CZ you will need an extension ring!

best in my opinion would be a 1.5x5 or a 1x4 leupold. You dont need any more magnification then that. The trajectory of a 375 limits it to 300 yard max and the animals your shooting will likely be on the large side.

I really don't understand the recommendations of the Leupold VX-III 2.5-8. While it is one of my favorite scopes and I do have perhaps more of them than any other single scope it isn't really that appropriate in this case. It has perhaps the least eye relief of any scope Leupold makes, it is rather short and requires extended bases or rings to make it fit properly on most long actions. Those characteristics just don't seem to me to make it proper in this application.

I use both the 1.5 x5 and 1x4 Leupold scopes on my Ruger old style rifles with excellent results.  However, the 1.5x5 or 1x4 length may not be enough for the longer .375 H&H actions.  To get the correct eye relief from my scopes for me, I had to set the scopes as far back toward the eye to get a clear field of view on standard length actions not suited for the longer .375.  I'd prefer to go with a phyically longer fixed power scope with longer eye relief for a big bore rifle like the .375 length actions.  One of the most important dangerous game rifle considerations is fit.  If one has to move the head, for or back to get a clear field of view, this might be the difference in a good shot being a bad one.  Being able to move the scope itself for or af,t when the rifle is fitted exactly as one would use it offhand in the field and still have full eye relief, is a major plus hunting DG..

you might be right Ive never owned a mag length ruger so cant really say. I know they work or a mauser action in those calibers with leupold rings and bases.
