That's exactly why I sold my 06 Chevy Silverado, and bought ANOTHER 2000 Jeep Wrangler. I know the motor, the vehicle and their dependable. It will last the rest of my life, ever how long that is.

A neighbor of mine has finally sworn off jeeps; last big deal was a starter problem; the teeth were only engaging about an eighth of an inch, and ground off; hee looked at a couple friends' jeeps of the same year/model, and all three had diffrent manufacturers!

That's true about Jeeps. All of the "accessories" like starters, alternators, fuel pumps and such were made by different manufactures with different mounting brackets and such. To get replacements you pretty much have to take the old part in to the store and match it up if possible. It's almost as if the designers said "now we need a power steering pump" so they sent someone out to buy one and then jury-rigged a bracket to mount it somewhere.

Jeeps are reliable??? You've got to be kidding me!

Nissan Pathfinders are reliable. Toyota Landcruisers and Rav 4s are reliable. Honda CRVs are reliable. These are all easily 200,000 mile plus vehicles with almost no maintenance. Jeeps are definitely not! (I"ve owned them ALL.)

Since we're off topic, I'll guess I'll have to go ahead and junk my Cherokee Sport. After all its passed the 200.000 mark a while back.

Lets add up what I have spent.

2 sets brakes, about $100.00 total
2 batteries, about $125.00 total.
4 sets tires at about $400.00 per set for $1600.00.
And that don't take into account the oil changes and washes.

Yep, too expensive, gotta go...........

OK, I'll get us back on track regarding guns. :-)

The reason I have to shoot cheap Walmart .30-30 ammo, is that the Jeep Cherokee I paid $24,000 for brand new was leaking from two seals in just 10 months of highway use, and it cost me a fortune to get them replaced. The reason I like solid steel .30-30s is that Jeep was putting Aluminum engines in their Cherokees in the 1990s, and surprise surprise, they leaked like sieves. If you have a Jeep that you have gotten 200,000 miles out of, then clearly that is newsworthy. Call The Guiness Book of World Records and let them know. For a quality Japanese RV, 200,000 miles plus is the ho-hum norm.

By the way, I never carry a lever gun in a vehicle rifle-rack any more. To much chance of a smashed window and a stolen gun. Does anybody else still carry them that way?

The Cherokee Sport has an inline 6 cyl. engine, and not a shred of aluminum other than the water pump and pistons. All of those engines have been excellent. My daughter presently has a 2006 Grand Cherokee with 168,000 miles on it. I've never cracked the hood so don't know what engine it has.

And by the way, no way will I carry a 30 30 or anything else in a gun rack. The cost of the gun, the cost of the window and the aggravation would be too great. I also pulled all my guns out of my glass doored gun cabinet and put them in my "hidey hole". Same thing.

All in good fun Mechanic. Glad you have a vehicle that you know from top to bottom and love.

Speaking of lever action .30-30s, I never hear about anyone shooting the old turn of the century straight-gripped, steel buttplate, Savage 99s in .30-30. Move have dates like 1905 stamped on their barrels, and carry 22 to 24 inch barrels.

Anyone have any experience with these?? Anyone have any doubts about shooting modern factory loads in them? The only reason that I haven't bought one, is that I would have to drill and tap it for a scope, and that would of course ruin it!

I don't have a jeep

, but I've got a 1899 Savage in a 30/30 made in 1907. It has a 26" BBL, has a very tight chamber, and shoots all manner 125gr (jacketed) to 190gr cast loads well! I installed a "vintage" tang sight, which makes shooting over 150 yard "doable". The longer barrel delivers another 100+fps over the traditional carbine barrel without the "cane pole" effect of some bolt action magnums. (Mine has not been tap and drilled.) While it shoots a 125Spt and 130HP bullets to about 2650fps, once over about 165gr bullet weight, "Spitzers" start encroching on too much of the powder space where "rounder" shaped bullets can still be used at reasonable velocities. The Savage will keep 5 rounds in a 1 1/2 circle at 100yards (on a good day---mine!) and is one of the most pleasant guns to shoot in .30cal at an easy carry 7 1/2 pounds. The straight grip (uncheckered) and steel buttplate make it a really nice "off hand" shooter, a design I would Not prefer in a harder "kicking" caliber. One note, it will not always chamber the brass used in my 336T Marlin, so I have to segregate my brass.

Your Model 99 sounds like a nice rifle. I must admit I am a little jealous.

I was looking at one that was for sale last year, I was tempted, but passed. From the wear patterns it appeared that it had ridden in a gun rack for the last seventy years.

I only use cast bullets in the 30-30's in my world, so haven't had that added cost,

but I don't recall having high costs for my Jeepster Commando, two CJ-5's, two Full-size Wagoneers, a Cherokee Sport and two Jeep Trucks. The Jeep Truck I have now is nearly 34 years old and recently turned 100,000 miles. It may just outlive me!

At some point I hope to have my own 30-30. It just hasn't hit the priority list, yet. I have handloaded for a dozen of them that belong to friends and family members. They just keep going and going...like my Jeeps!

One add Dee , It would be hard to beat the 30-30 for the guy with one rifle . Hunt most anything in America , Self defense it has worked for ever , as a last ditch rifle good power and no mag. to loose .
Whats not to like ? And they carry so nice in the hand where it should be .

Agreed SHOOTALL. I went out and practiced with mine at 200 yards yesterday. I love shootin 1 gallon jugs of water. Perhaps when I'm eighty I won't enjoy it so much, but I still get a little kick outa watch'em blow up. At 200 yards they look exactly the same with a 3030 150 grain, as they do with a 2506 87 grain hp. I wonder if deer know any different? $:-\$

Well here is a much more important weakness of DETACHABLE FED RIFLES. Lose the magazine, and it's a HARD TO FEED SINGLE SHOT!
With a 3030 lever action you can drop one in the action and shut the action which results in chambering the round. With a DETACHABLE FED RIFLE, if you "drop one in the action" it falls out the bottom where the magazine USED TO BE.
They all have their weakness.

if that is even a weakness
it seemed easy to fix

some one should design a pikatiny full leng forarm
lights lasers flash lights....and now so heavey it needs a bi-pod
