What Rifles do you plan to hunt with his Fall?
« on: October 18, 2008, 01:13:18 PM »
Bow Season is coming to a close and it is time to decide who is going hunting this year. My knight KP-1 45-70 with a ziess conquest 3x9x40 will be first up for primitive arms season (I hunt in Louisiana and Mississippi.) When Rifle season opens, I will be shooting My pre 64 Mod 70 270  with a german ziess 3.5X10X44 for Field hunting and My custom 35 wheelen built on a Savage action with a Leupold vx3 2X7 for woods hunting.  I have not hunted with the 270 in over 10 years and I decided that I wanted to hunt with a classic this year. My daughter will be hunting with My new to me Mod 70 featherweight 257 Bob with a leupold veri x 3 3X9X40. We shot it for the first time today with some Hornady light mag 117 gr sst loads. The accuracy was about 1.2 inches with her shooting at 100 yards, which is Her limit. She shot 23 rounds throughout the day and She got very comfortable with the rifle very quickly. I will load for this rifle in the future but I wanted to get her shooting it asap. When both the 270 and 35 Wheelen kill, all bets are off but My guess is that my 240 weatherby Mark 5 with a German Ziess 3.5X10x50 will be next up. What do you guys plan to shoot this year?

At this point it's somewhat doubtful I'll even get to hunt at all but if I do I'll likely take my Model Seven 7-08 more than any other. If I get ambitious and get it ready in time I might take the R700 LSS .257 Whby. out to give it a try. I might decide to give a lever action a run also in which case the nod likely would go to a Marlin in .35 Remington. Beyond that I'll be using my handguns again on any and all outings I take.

Last weekend I took my Savage 24 30-30 over 20 gauge for Cougar Bear and Grouse, shot one Blue Grouse with the 20 gauge part.  For Phesant I use a H&R 16 Gauge and I have a Savage 10 in 17 Remington for the Coyotes.  Larry

This year I will use my Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06 on Missouri whitetail.  I am going to be hunting from a blind overlooking a well used valley approach to a cypress grove resting area on a friend's acreage.  We scouted the area last weekend.

My Remington 700CDL .30-06 & my Remimgton 700ML.

I might try my Interarms Mark X Mauser in .270 if I can get a scope on it in time.

Was at the range today with Daughter #2 and her fiance.  They will be coming on the elk hunt at month end, although she won't actually hunt.

He will be using a Savage .30-06 with 168g TTSX.  I will use either a Remington M700 .30-06 and 168g TTSX or a Ruger .257 Roberts with either 115g TSX or 120g A-Frames.

I have a 700cdl in the same caliber that I bought last year and my 700bdl in 7mm rem mag that I bought a couple months ago ,for nostalgic reasons , had the same rifle in the early 1980's .
Cant wait to hunt with both.

Let's see...

Just came back from a Maine bear hunt - successful and posted in the bear hunting forum- and used a ruger 77 custom .300win by brown precision of LosMolinos CA.  Used 200gr Nosler ABs with 75gr RL22.  First week of December, I'm going to Wild Hill Preserve in VT with some fellows for either hogs and/or exotic sheep.  Taking a 1930's custom mauser in 7mm mauser for hogs (using 175gr Hornady RN) and a Rem 700 LVSF (Lite Varmi t Stainless Fluted) in 223 for sheep and using 60gr NosPart.

Used my new Ruger Hawkeye 338 Federal for antelope so far with 160gr Barnes H335 and had good success. My Daughter is using a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 so we are keeping her shots to a minmum of 225yrds which she's had no problem with at the range in field positions, she had opportunities but did'nt take a shot but will be able to have another change in Nov.  My wife didn't get out with us for the first season in Oct. but is using Win 70 Super Shadow in 270 WSM in Nov. My Brother in law will be hunting with us in Nov. with Rem 721 30-06.

My Rem 7600 7mm-08 will be my primary deer rifle and I'll take my M70 classic stainless 30-06. I may even take my S&W 629 out. For squirrel I'll take my Win M52 repro or my 10-22.

Not a bolt-action, and not really this fall as the rifle deer season (does only) doesn't open until January, but I will test out this Thompson Center TCR with a 6MM-06 barrel. It has a Bartlien barrel with a 1-in-7.5 twist and my load is 105-grain Berger VLD's at about 3,300 fps.

well my Rem 7 300SAUM got the nod for elk hunting
I'm sure I'll take the 98 Mauser 7mm-08 deer hunting
Hopefully I'll get a chance to use the 44mag too.
My daughter took her elk with a 270 Handi rifle
probably put the 243 barrel on it for deer, and maybe
see if she can bloody the Mossberg ATR 243 I got for her sister

This year I will be using my Dad's M700 (1963 model) in 30-06. My normal go to rifle is a Model 700 Mtn. rifle in 7mm/08. I also hunt with my Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt. Oh yeah I shoot a 500 S&W Handi-rifle during primitive weapon season.

Rem 700 sps in 7-08.
At least one or two  days I'll take the win model 94 30-30 my Dad gave me over 50 years ago. It is still as accurate but it mostly brings back fond memories.

FN SPR 300wsm, this is a old photo before the switch to a nightforce scope.
Using 190 grain berger vld bullets Im getting 2 1/2 inche groups at 300y, pushing them along at a sedate 2800 fps.

The rest of the time I will be using a 44 mag contender handgun and/or encore 209x50 muzzleloader.

Used a 270 the first week on four does.  I love my 7mm-08 in Rem LVSF (uncatelogued) and my Mod-7 in 308.  Then there is my 25-06 and my 280AI beanfield rifle, not to mention my 30-06 and 300WSM.  I really like my Contender pistol in 7-30 Waters.  I rarely use my Mod 70 Featherweight in 243.

Darn, its hard to find a favorite when they all work.  Almost forgot my 7mm Rem.

Hi all. Tomorrow morn. I will leaving for the late season elk hunt in Colorado. I will packing my 1978 Rem. 700 in the obsolete, dis-respected, worthless, unpopular and out of production 8mm Rem. Magnum. With all the "magnum-itis" (especially in the 80's) I am surprised it never caught on. What is even more amazing is that I paid $210 for it brand new in '78!  At my lease in S.Texas I use a plethora of rifles, 243s,270,30/06,K98 in 8x57,two rifles in 300 Savage (m.99 and m.81 Rem.),K-31 Swiss and a Ruger 77 in 458 for the big hogs. At least if I'm not seeing anything I can stroke a different firearm!  Kix
