Whats the worst thing anyone has ever said about one of your bears. My first black bear was small 150# but a very light golden coat. When I brought the bear to the game office in town to be tagged a friend walked up and stated it was sure going to make a nice pillow case.It tasted great.

To tell you the truth, I don't care what others think. I have a 400, 206, 175 and 102 lb bears.
My 400lb is a rug, the 102 and 175 are full body mounts, and my 206 is getting a shoulder mount. I am proud of them all.

I have had people slam my smaller bears, and some tell me they were smaller than what I said they were. I never had a reason to lie about my bears weights. I always say, it is what it is.
The funny thing is, most of the B.S. I have got was from guys that have never even shot a black bear.

Sorry to go on a minor rant.  ;D

Yep the smaller ones eat better also and they are all bears down and not many can say that. My brown rug just makes 7 1/2 foot and thats fine with me.I have seen lots of bigger bears just wasn't hunting at the time. Looks like I may be moveing back to Alaska soon Prince of Wales island or Wrangell so bear will be in my diet again.

I shot a smallish bear 10 years ago on my first bear hunt. It was a spring hunt, an d the bear weighed about 125bs. It was aged at 3 1/2 years old. I got my chops busted over it becsue of its size.

The bear was average for the week as 4 other guys shot bear the same exact size.

I guess it depends on your perspective. If the area is capable of better, then a small bear is small. If the b ear is average for the area, then it is not. Also a Monday bear should be bigger than a Friday bear on a 5 day hunt if you get my drift.

I just got back from a hunt in NB. I shot a larger 200lb bear this time around, I basically took the guides advice at shooting anything bigger than 150 (the local average. It was good advice, as 3 bears shot that week ranged the size of mine, 3 were larger. I think on the next hunt I will hold out for somethign at least 300lbs, becase that area in the fall is capable of producing.

150 is not a baby, so you should not be ashamed of it. It's not a trophy. If you don't hunt that often, it's  good bear.

My buddy shot a very small bear in Canada one year. No one was harder on him then himself. He kept referring to his new trophy as "Little Boo-Boo".  ;D

Although it was small it had a fantastic, long, thick, black coat which made a nice rug. It was actually one of the best hides I've ever seen.
