Rem 742 Switch Safety from Right to Left Handed
« on: October 14, 2008, 09:45:18 AM »
How difficult would it be to make this change and how much should it cost?  Thanks.

Easy 10 minutes knowing that you know your 7600's, it's the same. The only place I know is Numrich to get the safety. Less than 25 bucks. I just got another one last week. If you can't find it (try a word search under Remington 1100 safeties, I think that's how I found it), let me know I'll figure out how I found it. Good Luck.

My only caveat to this swap is, if you ever lend or sell that rifle, make sure the user knows the safety has been reversed.  Otherwise, they'll be thinking it's on "safe" when really it's ready to fire.

Are any special tools needed to do this job?

NY, you need to poke out the two pins that hold the trigger assembly in. I think I used an eighth or three sixteenth drill bit the last time. Any straight punch will do. Then you have to have a smaller punch for a pin in the back of the trigger assembly. That has a tiny spring under it, under tension so that is the trickiest part. Just make sure you do it in a place where if it pops out you can find it. That's it. If you decide to do it I can walk you through it. There weren't any instructions in the last safety I got but I had already done about 20 of them so it didn't matter. If you want pm me and I'll give you my phone number to walk you through it. But, to answer your question. No special tools. Anything that will punch those pins out without doing damage will do the job.
