which TC scope rail on a Handi?
« on: October 11, 2008, 03:00:09 PM »
I know I have seen this posted before but I cannot find it with the serach feature. Which TC scope rail fits the diameter of a Handi Barrel the best?
IIRC there were some posts a while back that mentioned using TC scope rail and putting some fine sandpaper over the reciever and them running the scope rail back and forth over the sandpaper to adjust the radius to fit perfectly.
Anyone recall which TC rail was used? either the model number or for which TC?Thanks....<><....:)

The 92A Weaver base for the Contender fits mid-barrel where the factory rear sight would mount, makes a great scout mount, but the contour is wrong for any TC base for mounting over the chamber, the Encore barrel is smaller in diameter at .996" compared to 1.1XX" for H&R barrels.

I have opened up a number of early H&R bases for the newer production NEF/H&R's but never anything for a T/C. I prefer a silicone carbide paper though, not typical wood working "sand" paper.

Besides the hole spacing is wrong. Are you intending on drilling and taping for the different T/C holes?  If so, I will assume its for the additional hole and extra strength. If this is the case, note T/C chooses to use very small screws, do you self a favor and open up the holes for #8 screws and enjoy even more strength.

This has been done for years and years with the heavy recoiling calibers in the Contender. I had to do this on my 357 Herrett. It sheered the smaller screws clean off!!!

I'm using the Weaver 92A base on 2 barrels;  one on the .45-70 and the other on a .30-30, to mount pistol scopes in the "scout" position over the rear sight position.  The .45-70 barrel had only one screw hole available and I used JB Weld to secure it.  No problem so far.  The .30-30 is only secured by 2 screws.  At least a couple of hundred shots so far without any problems.
