Dumb Idea or Sheer Genius
« on: October 10, 2008, 05:16:13 PM »
I shoot better when I wear my reading glasses.  Have a hard time lining up the open sights and  the scope image looks blurry without my reading glasses.  What if................you could put a tang sight that pops up like the sights that are fitted to rifle stocks but is a round reading glass??????  Can you see that???  Maybe I have too much time on my hands.  What do you think ?????

If your scope is blurry you need to either refocus it or buy a higher quality scope. That is what that focus ring on the ocular is for ya know.

I sure can feel for ya on the irons as that has been a real problem for me for years but it is actually getting better believe it or not. I have perfect distance vision but my close up vision is kinda lousy I cannot read without reading glasses. For years I've been using the longest barrels possible on my handguns to get that front sight out where it can be seen. On long guns it already is. You do know you never were able to focus on target, front and rear sights all right? Concentrate on the front sight let the rear and target blurr that's the way it's supposed to work. If you can't see the front clearly tho you can't shoot well.

I have been diagnosed with dry eyes and am now being treated for it with drops regularly to include restasis twice a day and a non prescription pill also twice a day. I can see better than I have in a lot of years. At the worst my vision was determined to be 20/80 left eye and 20/250 right eye. At my last check up it was 20/20 both eyes.

I get it.  Put reading glass material in a Marble tang sight and line it up with your iron sights.
I would not say "genius"  But not the dumbist thing I have thought of or heard of here.
I some how would still loose then or leave it on my desk some how.   ;D
Good luck making it.
Grey beard is right you should be able to adjust any scope to be able to see through it with out your  reading glasses.

Bill, that is remarkable....No, Superb.  Bless you, my friend.  It is one of the best things I've heard in a long time.  I have a very similar problem and they have given me my vision back.

Tony, I'd see my eye doctor first.  You shouldn't have to be jumping through hoops to shoot.  If your eyes are going bad, no set of sights or scope will fix it.  Get your eyes fixed first.

I got the all clear to shoot, recoil in mind, from my eye doctor yesterday after having a cataract removed from my shooting eye.  This morning I was dusting clay pigeons with my .30-30 at 100 and 200 yards with the old 336 Marlin and factory open sights. (missed a couple at 200, pilot error, not the rifle.)  I haven't been able to do that for more than 20 years.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

I have several scopes that do not have enough adjustment of focus to be able to focus them clearly when I have on my distant-vision glasses.  Not the scope's problem, when you get extremely near sighted that's the way it works out.

SO, the reading glasses work out well.

BUT, beter than that is to have a set of glasses set for not 18" (reading glasses focal distance) but for 36" (arm's length or computer distance when sitting in an easy chair).  That gives you prety good distant vision and prety good near vision for iron sights!

I have to get a prototype built.  Dollar Gen's $5 glasses should work fine.  And you get two tries - two lenses.  The other alternative would be those high brow monicales that they show in every WWII movie that the German Generals are wearing.  Maybe I'll go that route and just sqint a monocule to my shooting eye.

BTW, DPE.AHOY, stop looking in my den window.  I like the cookies but not the beer, it messes with my milk and cookies.

First, adjust your scopes.  As for the iron sights, i converted to peep sites on all my open sited guns.  Works great with or without my glasses.  In fact if I don't have my glasses on I can still see through the peep just as thou I had my glasses on.  Looking through the appature helps me bring everything into focus.
