Couple Handies going hunting without me.
« on: October 10, 2008, 09:24:17 AM »
Its a youth weekend here in Kentucky and a good friend of mine has a good  kid we call Bear, Bear is 8 and headed out for his first hunting trip, I'm loaning him my .357 max and .44mag. He has shot both before and did well but that was with full size stocks on them, I cut down a stock to more youth size and we're gonna have him shoot a few rounds tonite.  Then we'll see which one he wants to carry tommarow.  I don't think I could be much more excited than if it was my own kid.  I hope I can be sittin at the cabin when they drag one in.

Bob, you can't do better.  That's wonderful!!  Hope the kid scores.  Neighbor kid, 12, got a ten point a week ago last Saturday on our youth hunt here.  It dressed out at 186 lbs.  Got his pic in the paper and everything.  First day, first hunt.  I told him, Kidding, "You might as well hang up the gun, you did it all on your first hunt."  Got it with dad's .308.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

Good story Petemi, I love to hear about new hunters pleases me to no end when a kid makes his game kill, We need them to, I hear how every year there are less hunting, we need to bring them in young and teach them how to do it right, It can only be good for the sport and good for the game.

I took my little cousin out on MI's youth hunt a few weekends ago, she is 13 and I took her because her dad was on call.  Although is could take the recoil of a few full power 30-30 loads I didnt risk it and made up some, low recoil cast loads for my Handi with the Topper JR stock (short youth stock), 1800 fps is nothing to cough at with a 180gr flat nose.   She elected to pass the shot on the few deer that we did have a good shot on.  But she called me the next day saying how much fun she had and couldnt wait to come up and hunt with me durning rifle season.  She doesnt bow hunt but, when she was up I let her shoot one of my older Bear recurves, #35 she did pretty good so maybe in the next few years I will have a new bow hunting buddy since my brother moved to Florida with his wife.

When he hangs one we need PICTURES!!!

Did'nt get one this weekend but the Litter feller had a good time and I think his Dad is gonna hafta buy him a handie rifle, He was able to shoot about a 1.5" 3 shot group with my .44 sitting at 50 yards.  It has a cut down stock on it and the Williams FP peeps on it with the .125 appeture, He really enjoys shooting it so his Dad is done for, He can use mine the rest of the year thou and maybe he'll get his first with it.

My son out grew his youth stock, and has no farther use for his .243, (We live in Alaska, and he hunts big game.  College student don't have time for varmint shooting with his old man).  So the wife turned the .243 pink, and purple.  She carries it to the youth shooting classes when they are shooting for their practical at the outdoor range.  It's something to see, a bunch of 10, 11, and 12 year old girls get so excited.  Funny what guns can do for kids.

Hope your little friend gets his deer.  .44 Mag is a good choice, my wife started out with one.  She brought down a lot of Deer, and a few Black Bears with it.

Man this is GREAT!!  I also completely agree with you, we need MORE STORIES LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

I did the SAME this yesterday, a good friend who's oldest son is hunting this year for the first time. He is a lefty and did is not, dad (My buddie) only has a 30-06 and the kid is scared if it. So enter, CW and the Handi.  Nice choice for the lefty as everything works sans moving the hammer extension. I grabbed a 30-30, 243, 44Mag, 45Colt and 357maxi. I was secretly hoping he didn't like the Maxi as I like to shoot a deer with that each year.

He shot the 30-30, the 44 and 45 kicked too much the Maxi and 243 where last to shoot. He shot the Maxi first as the 243 looked too much like the 06 for his taste. Well...he liked that maxi best, To the point where I almost had to force him to try the 243. The 243 is an ultra varmint, nice looking gun. Three shots and he was sold on the 243, light recoil, tack driving accuracy won it for him. he shot about 30 rounds and shot pretty well for his first time as well. He could hit a golf ball every-time out to 100. He will do fine if the fever doesn't get him too bad. ::) ::)

I just called and set up the purchase of a 243 Handi for the kid. He and his pop are headed down there right aft dinner tonight to make the deal. He should have the rifle by the weekend!!

Another handi-haulic is in the wings...
 ;D ;D
