My father, who's now in his 60's, still hunts with a Winchester 30-30 that has been in our family since the turn of the last century, originally bought by my great grandfather.  Loaded with 170 grain flat nose bullets, it has accounted for every one of the game animals listed, except for the brown bears.  To the best of my knowledge, my father has never hunted with any other rifle, and I've never seen hiim shoot an animal more than once, but he does try to get pretty close before he shoots.

As for me, my first rifle was a Winchester 88 in 308, and it would also work just fine for anything short of the big bears if you loaded it with 165 or 180 grain Nosler Partitions.  At least, that's been my experience.

For big bears, I'd probably take a 444 loaded with 310 grain WNFP cast bullets.  I'd be just as happy with a 358 in a Savage 99, Winchester 88, or BLR, as long as it was loaded with 225 or 250 grain partitions.

LeverMan, I must aggree with you on this one as I also know men (some younger) who are not caught up in the "super duper magnum craze." They hunt ALL North American big game animals with the simple, yet classic Winchester model 94, .30-30! They get in close and they are successful because they know their rifle and its limitations. I believe many of them hunt with the Federal Premium .30-30 Nosler Partition. So far it has done more than what has been expected!

Take care,
Rifle Man

1. Whitetail:  Just because I like the cartridge, a '94 Winchester chambered in 7-30 Waters.
2. Elk: '95 Winchester in .30-06
3. Moose and Brown Bear:  1886 Winchester in .45-70

:D  Thain't no Whitetail 'roun heah! So...
1)For Blacktail and Mule Deer I use my '86 LW .33 WCF.
    2) AS to the bigger game, the same in cal.45-90 does the trick.
I get my kicks from an 1886.

Easy question

Well Rifleman,
You made it easy with the 125 yard cap on distance. I would take my Marlin 1895 GG in .45-70 and use either the 405 hard cast lead bullets or the Remington 405 grain bullets over 48 grains of IMR 3031, for about 1700 fps. Accurate with both bullet type. With the lead bullets, an unbelievable penetrator. With the jacketed bullets it is a good deer cartridge.

I would use my Marlin 336, 35 Rem.  For whitetails 180gr Speer FP all the rest; 220 Speer FP.  As far as Brown Bear is concerned, if he aint taking and chewing chunks atta my butt I'd leave the SOB alone.  All you gotta do is learn to place the bullet and then you wouldnt have ta worry about all the high powered cannons.

HI,

I have been just looking at this site for awhile , so I thought I would jump on. I would use my win 86 custom by Dave Clay into a 50-110 for anything on this planet. I have been shooting a 525 grain WFN at 2,200fps.This is from a 22.5 inch barrel, I am now working on Woodeighs 600grain PPSP, I have flatten there nose down and now they weigh around 550-560 grains and hope to get 2100fps with them,Kev

1)  Marlin 1895 GG  45-70  300 grain bullet

2)  Marlin 1895 GG  45-70  405 grain bullet

3)  Marlin 1895 GG  45-70  400 grain hammerhead

4)  Marlin 1895 GG  45-70  500 grain hammerhead

(Can't remember the weights of the hammerheads, so weights listed are approximate)

jradloff...if that old brown bear comes the BuffaloBore 220 grain Heavy 35 Rems will work just fine...remember it's all shot placement...but 220 grain BuffaloBore's or a nice handload will work quite effectively...35 Rem great short distance round...

RIFEL MAN -

Marlin 1895 22"
350g North Fork @ 2183fps

Would take any at the specified distance of 125 yards.

Thank God I'm not limited to just one, though!

For Whitetail BLR 257 Roberts and anything bigger BLR IN 358 Win. I am no means partial to Browning nut, but with a removable clip, that is a nice convenience. I can say that if I were hunting anything smaller than Whitetails, my Savage 1899 H, 22-Hi-Power might get the nod.

Either my 1895 Marlin 45-70 or my Win. 94AE .356 Win. with the appropiate ammunition.  Really have no interest in the brown bear as I hear they aren't much for table fare.

I'd use my Win 88 .308 with the Federal 180 gr Nosler high energy for all of them.  Bowhunters take all those critters with a sharp stick.  If I can't put a Brownie down with 5 shots from my 88, then I deserve to get eaten.
