Winchester 54 scope mounting

Can this model be fitted with a top mount scope, without alot of modification?
Don't argue with an idiot, people will have a hard time telling the difference!

If the 54 is the bolt action that was produce just prior to the introduction of the M70 then yes. It is easy to scope. It will likely need drilling and tapping and a safty change but is fairly easy. Any good smith could handle the chore, the real question is, should you do it??? The M54 Winchester is quite collectable andalterations such as this would surely adversely affect it'svalue not to mention deface a significant piece of history.. There are some other options for scoping but most get more complicated..

I have a 54 action that I bought years ago for $75 bucks. Its in 30-30 and was made in 1928. OK now on to the stuff you need to know. First off the bolt handle will need to be altered to allow the use of telescopic sights. I had mine done a long time back by Griffen & Howe in new york. Second my action was factory drilled for both iron sights and scope mounts. And third, redfield made or makes a one piece base for this rifle. Check w/Brownelles tech support to see if its still available. If you do go ahead and have the bolt handle altered, a model 70 type bolt handle will look good. When I bought my 54, the dealer had a barrel full of the barreled actions. Supposedly these came in from south america and were very popular in the 30-30 caliber. The bore on my barrel was totally rusted, corroded, and very little rifling was present. Hope this helps in your quest. Frank
