New 700 ADL stock
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:45:11 PM »
Received a new walnut Rem 700 ADL stock from Sportsmans Gui__.  When the action screws are tightened the bolt won't close.  Or when the action screws are tightened when the bolt is closed the bolt won't open.  Is the front action screw now too long and should I file the end of the screw?  There is only about an eighth of a turn on the screw difference in clearance.

When the action screws are tightened the bolt won't close.  Or when the action screws are tightened when the bolt is closed the bolt won't open.

A lota people don't believe it, but a barreled action will bend like a water hose!   :D  For example, if the barreled action is laid in the stock, and resting on the tang shelf and barrel pressure point at the front of the stock (talking Rem fac stocks here), and in so doing the receiver ring is lifted off the stock a bit, when you tighten he action screw it will bend the Bbl/action assembly and bind the bolt. The bolt won't open if closed at first, or won't close if open at first.  Don't ask me how I know...  :-[

The bright side is that this is a perfect reason/opportunity to glass the recoil lug!   ;D

Atlaw +1, BUT, it could be the screw is too long and entering the receiver ring and binding it up.  That happened to me before as well.  Take some lipstick or something and coat the bottom of the action around the screw hole and tighten it gradually until the bolt won't function.  As soon as the bolt won't move, stop.  If the action is bottoming out, you'll the lipstick on the stock.  If it's not, you'll know that the action is bending.

I just checked it and with the action screws tightened the barrel is free floated, and the bolt won't function.  By the way originaly it's an ADL Synthetic 25/06 bought new on discount after the SPS replaced it.

I'd get a file and take one thread off of the screw at a time until it doesn't bind up anymore.  It shouldn't take much to clear it up.  Maybe not even a whole thread's worth.

Thanks you guys.  I better take it off again and just be sure it stays the same(floated).  I'll go slow and careful to not take off too much.

Took that 25/06 ADL with the new walnut stock to the range after filing a little on the front action screw today.  All I can say is that it is now free floated, functions just as good and still shoots.

I picked up an older model 700 30/06 with a wood stock and ran into a problem with the bolt binding up when the front action screw was tightened. Ended up being the wood was compressed in the stock where the screw goes into and was letting it (bolt) get into the lug recess and bind up the bolt. Short work with a file cleared it up.

Put a washer under the head of the action screw and tighten it up and see if it is till binding.  If its not, it is apparent that the screw is too long.
